Found my copy of the film and when he takes a shot of "Mother and Country" you get a good shot of the camera. Shame that the wind on kn-ob is pulled out so he can't wind it on!

I don't see anything wrong with collecting cameras from films, I can only presume they were chosen for a good reason though rather than just whatever was hanging around!

Coincidentally, there's a box camera in one of the local charity shops up here. No idea what it is as I just saw it while passing. It's not my bag but I can check it out if anyone's interested.

Re: Vintage film cameras

OK so I found time earlier than I'd expected! You can use the spiky end of your lens tool for this, but it won't go small enough as is. Take the two connecting bars out so you have the spikes/blades loose. Put one spike in each hole and brace them against each other, a bit like this
Removing cap from 55 gal drum - YouTube
but with them more vertical. As you twist, they will first of all twist around each other, but keep a grip on them and keep twisting, and they'll jam against each other and start working on the screw instead. Once it's loose you can usually use one to spin the screw out.

Got the package Kenzie, had a quick look but won't have any real time until at least mid next week. Bessa seems very sticky, it wouldn't even fire on 150 to start with, so I suspect it's well gunked. Newer escapements, and I include the 60s Prontor ones, are basically one mechanism for all speeds. Some others like Copal have a lever (the one that hangs out towards the self timer) that is a bit like having first and second gear, so the main part of the escapement can run down fast or slow, to cover all the speeds from 1s up to 1/500 or whatever. Older ones like these can have two mechanisms in the escapement, switching from one to the other at maybe the 1/25 or 1/10 speeds. You can see when it's open as the grooves of the speed ring at some point will hold part of the escapement up so it can't move while another part is still able to be adjusted. For example
https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7343/2...38de1b63_z.jpg1/25 setting by John Rodriguez, on Flickr
The follower about 1 o'clock is now stuck up at 1/25 and above, rotate clockwise for lower speeds and it has space to drop inwards. Anyhoo it's academic which bit is gunged as it all needs a clean! It looks like a fairly simple one, maybe similar to a Vario, seems to have only three leaves, looking from the front.

On RFF they are having a photo contest to win a Rolleiflex, the theme is to shoot in the style of Vivian Maier. I got nowhere trying to define her style first - she was a street photographer but shot pretty much everything. One thing that was interesting though is that she put herself in a lot of pictures, either as selfies using something reflective, or her shadow. Sometimes it adds a new dimension to a picture, like this:

Well I go away in just over a week, so no rush! Going to load up the Gevabox and see what 17 year old film is like!

Don't mention old film. Before I got sucked in here, when I was sorting old cameras, I found a 5 pack of Konica 400 ASA that I bought in Japan in 2005..... and of course I thought it was too old and binned it.

Re: Vintage film cameras

Had a bit of success tonight with my Pentax K2. I've never shot with it, and if I didn't have a shutter speed tester I'd have just tried it out - it's in great condition. When I got it I checked the speeds and the faster ones seemed to be slow and erratic; tonight I've found out it's fine. The shutter tester is a photo transistor, it has a reasonably narrow field of view, but not that narrow. This is fine for leaf shutters, but a curtain shutter is pretty big, so you really need to measure the exposure time at just one point. I was using a lamp as a light source, and tonight used a laser on a small spirit level from Aldi. Seems the phototransistor was seeing light from when the shutter slit was passing it, but also either side of it as it was approaching and receding, so the time it was illuminated seemed (was) much longer than the actual exposure time. Can't get that with a laser. It was a bit of a pig to line up accurately but got there in the end. The K2 is basically accurate, even a touch quick. I checked my MX too, 1/1000 came out 1/1260, 1/250 was 1/270, so underexposing a bit. Tried my Olympus S rangefinder but couldn't get a reading - I think the lens was dispersing too much light - I did the SLRs with the lenses removed, and on the K2 with the mirror locked up (the MX doesn't have that feature). Shame as it would be interesting to see the difference, but a leaf shutter always goes through its full range of movement at any speed so the lamp is probably fine - maybe I should try at small aperture instead of wife open.

Hurrah! Time to give it a try. Or maybe the Contessa first, when it arrives*... am starting to feel a bit guilty about buying my own birthday present.

* if it works from the off of course!

Re: Vintage film cameras

I wouldn't feel guilty, sometimes you just have to treat yourself. So you were pretty much chasing a problem that wasn't there then?

I think 3 or 4 and a couple of lenses are not in the pics.
It is SLR heavy. Quite a few came in bundles, either together or with a lens I wanted.
Selling the MX winder, a few unwanted lenses, teleconverters and flashes, a few Minoltas, the P30, and 2 are going to China.

Nothing wrong with buying your own birthday present Johnny. That way, you get something you want and that you'll use.

Re: Vintage film cameras

Reskinned the XD5 this morning. Johnny, I followed the technique you linked - I don't have a lens tool but used a couple of thickish pins instead and managed to remove the timer switch.
It looks OK in blue.
There's foam on the back of the film door. I added another strip to sit opposite this on the camera body. I'll put another film through but if it still leaks light, I'll be tempted to reach for a hammer.

Looking good there Yoko, where did you get the kit from? Just won a job lot with a Kodak Hawkeye flash in plus three others. The two 127 Brownies will get donated unless anyone wants them for sprocket photography?

Looks good. I keep getting you two mixed up when reading posts! It stems back form the dial-up days when time was money so I tend to skim a bit too quick, apologies! Glad you got there in the end anyway.

Kenzie, the box camera in the charity shop is a Rex Coronet I think. Dunno if it works but the shutter fires.

Re: Vintage film cameras

Yoko when you come to sell your stuff, try adding international postage, I just found out the other day it's pretty easy. There is a postage estimator tool, but you could just use the Royal mail site, up to 2kg and £20 compensation is a flat £5.60 for the whole world. The Pentacon case that came with the camera bag has just sold to a guy in Spain today, and it's not like it's the only one on ebay. Just be careful about the amount of compensation insurance as I forgot this a few times in the past and just had to take the hit on the extra postage cost (it was UK). Anyway stuff like the MX winder needs a wide audience to find a buyer, hence i thought I'd mention it.

Re. ebay in Spain, I think this is a newish area for them, I'm seeing more ads from there, and from the pricing etc. it looks like a seller's market. I could be totally wrong, just the way I see it.

Kenzie 16-09-16 07:57 PM

Re: Vintage film cameras

Saw a mention from a camera skin seller refusing to ship to Spain due to the large amount of packages going missing, same issue with Italy apparently. I haven't sold on eBay in years. If it's in the EU I don't think you have to put customs info on, worldwide will need a declaration.

johnnyrod 16-09-16 08:04 PM

Re: Vintage film cameras

That's right, the shipping label prints from Paypal instead of Ebay but from that end it's pretty easy - it also prints a proforma proof of postage (CoP). I also sold one of the wife's things to someone in Norway which is non-EU and it also printed the customs declaration for me. TBH if it goes missing then I get my money back and that's all I'm after, i hope it doesn't but it's beyond my control. I think you can make an exclusion list of countries too, as part of the listing, and it just won't show up there. Anyhoo fiver for the case, so a free bag and a pint of ale!

yokohama 16-09-16 08:16 PM

Re: Vintage film cameras

I'm still a little unsure about shipping abroad on ebay. I know it opens up the market but there's more scope for things to go wrong. The winder should sell OK. Seems there's not many about and it's already got a couple of bids on it

Out shooting with Perkeo and 620 Junior on the coast. Hp5 and ektar.
Not much about in the charity shops. Found a Kodak Brownie Cresta 3 with flash and it still had a film in it. Found a sealed diy tlr kit in cash converters for 3.99 so grabbed it.

Finally finished the roll in the Konica, and got one shot left on the Certo. I know what I want to use it on, need to have some evening sunshine for it so hopefully this week, then 4 rolls to send off for printing. Hopefully the Contessa will be here soon, I'm actually pretty excited in case you can't tell!
