Chain Fling - Sticky Stuff
 

I have changed my chain lubricant to a new one which is superb for the chain, but I cannot seem to get the back wheel clean now due to the excess amount of chain fling on there.

There also seems to be a bit on the chain side of the swing arm.

I tried my usual Comma Alloy Cleaner, this normally works on anything, but on this occasion it didn't even touch it!

I have done my best and left it at that, put some more on the chain so it's nice and lubed, but I would like some advice on what to use to remove it.

The lube is (I think) Holts Universal Chain Lube.

I use paraffin to get rid of the chain lube from the chain and wheel when I'm cleaning the SV - works wonders...

Use PJ1 its very sticky you get no fling.

As for getting the old stuff off your wheels I find fairy liquid (but use somewax afterwards) or WD40 gets almost anything off anything.

Undiluted fairy? I use fairy in the wash anyway, but didn't think to use it neat.......might be worth a try.

Undiluted fairy is strong stuff, I use it in small spots to remove most stuff.

The problem is it strips all protection off your paint etc and it has been said that it fades your paint quite bad, so i dont tend to use it on paintwork, and if i do wax again straight after.

Parafin +2. Also good for cleaning the bath and hands after washing bike parts in the bath :rolleyes:.

It works miracles. Muc off isn't bad neither but it'd need a scrub.

never ever use fairy or any sort of washing up liquid, it contains salt!!!!!!!!! Salt plus bike is not good. Wd 40 is super duper for getting chain lube off. I got some Holts chain lube the other day( it goes on like green snot) as I was fed up with chain wax dryness. The snot covered my newly polished rims with fling and the WD got it off very nicely

I have got that Holts chain lube and I hate it, dunno if it's justified but the fact it's green means it's visible everywhere! Also, it doesn't change it's consistency like the Castrol chain lube I normally seem to end up with does. The Castrol stuff goes on fairly liquidy but gets a fair bit thicker and sticks to the chain better from what I've seen.

Although the Holts stuff is doing a decent enough job of sticking to the chain I prefer the Castrol for the other reasons.

Btw to get it off the wheel, I wash the wheel down (doesn't get it off but gets anything loose off) and then just polish the wheel. Using polish gets it off pretty easily. And you get a shiny wheel :D

Parafin, it's good for cleaning the chain and the wheel, and is cheap.

I've heard that using a can of hair spray (not the cheap stuff) cleans the back wheel up brilliantly?
Anyone else tried using it?

Mr Sheen polish is the king at getting chain lube off your wheel or if a bit has splattered on the underside bodywork. Quick squirt and it wipes straight off and doesn't run everywhere like parafin.

I use parafin to clean the chain, don't use petrol as it can affect the seals.

Muc off motorcycle cleaner is excellent but pricey. Smells nice though!!

Paraffin & Gunk seem to make the tyre VERY slippery if not thoroughly rinsed - Beware !

I used paraffin on the chain itself and someone bought me some Wurth engine and wheel cleaner as a b'day present once, which was also very good

I used to get socks and crap like that, never anything as fancy as bike cleaning products. My family obviously hate me.
