Has anyone been done for speeding between 70 and 100 on a motorway?

I'm curious what the consequences are and how common this is?

Does insurance generally go up more and is it deemed worse than say an SP30?
:)

Re: Has anyone been done for speeding between 70 and 100 on a motorway?

I've been done for doing 65 on a motorway when there was a temporary
50 mph restriction due to road works. Didn't see either the
temporary restriction or the camera due to thick fog.

The offence code was SP50 (I think it stands for "speeding on a
motorway"). As a consequence the cost of my insurance renewal
increased by around 20 pounds.

I've been stopped three times.

First time 101mph average. 5 points and a fine after a court appearance

Second time. As far right as the SV speedo would go. Let off.

Third time. Was listed as excessive speed. (95 mph) but was actually filtering at that speed so didn't get clocked doing real speeds. SP50 3 points and a fine.

Going back 18 years or so ago but 90ish, 3 points, 30 odd quid fine, SP50.

The insurance issue was.....complicated.....so hard to determine the effects of that offence.

Before the renewal was due I got another SP50 for over 100 and then did about 10 grands worth of damage to my bike and a poor woman's VW in Putney...

So it was hard to tell how much of the first SP50 was reflected in my quote for £1500 Third Party Only...

Re: Has anyone been done for speeding between 70 and 100 on a motorway?

I got caught doing 82 mph by a scamera van on a motorway 18 months ago and got 3 points, a £60 fine and SP50 on my license. My bike insurance went down the following year too so I don't think it makes that much difference, it didn't to me at least.

Re: Has anyone been done for speeding between 70 and 100 on a motorway?

Just recently been caught with a 99.87mph average and over 110 in places, cop who pulled me was acually a biker and dealt with it very well! He said to me usually anything over 94mph goes straight to court and over 100mph = insta ban. I got away with a fixed penalty 3 points and £60 fine!! Couldn't belive i did it but i actually thanked him.

M27. 98MPH. SP50. 4 points and £360 fine. Court summons but plea by letter was accepted. About five years ago I think.

Once over took a plain police car at 110MPH on the M5. Think it was 1979/80...£60 fine and a two week ban. My mate got the same.

It's not big and it's not clever folks.:smt009

I don't recall it affecting my insurance tho'.

I'm offended.

No I haven't been a naughty boy but after getting home from Leamigton the other day quicker than I'd normally have done I was curious how it would affect me if I got done. I need my license for my job.

How about "progressing" then?

PS and get some thicker skin! Don't get me wrong, but anyone who gets offended by that remark (in this context!!) is (IN MY OPINION) silly... Whilst, yes, the supposed 'dictionary of slang' lists "(monkey....)being used by whites to describe blacks, by US blacks to describe whites or West Indians, and by Americans generally to describe Japanese or Chinese." I find no *proper* dictionary definitions (proper dictionaries, mind) that list this as a racist term. I didn’t actually realise it could be racist until the apology was stated - indeed, were the Monkey's (the band) when they sang their songs being racist, and whenever anyone says "stop monkeying around" are they implying racial connotations? And when I get into work and say “it’s brass monkey’s out there” or
phrases to that effect am I also being racist?

Another example (and I suppose the real root of this frustration), some of us were talking about types of fruit you can have over summer, and I said was looking forward to cherries coming into season, and how I was going cherry picking at the local fruit farm (it’s a PYO, with strawbs, rasbs and a whole host of other lovely fruit yum yum!). Someone I work with overheard this, and decided that because I’d mentioned ‘cherry picking’ I was being racist! Please could someone explain how?! Anyway, I’ve just had an official summons to my line manager to explain myself! It’s crazy.

Sorry to rant, but I think that it’s a common problem with todays’ society, where people try and read racism into a situation where it’s not intended – hell if we try and not use *any* word that could possibly offend anyone ever anywhere, then we’d all mumble – actually, oops, I’ve just offended people who have speech impediments. Apologies.

Grrrrrr.

Re: Has anyone been done for speeding between 70 and 100 on a motorway?

My insurance went up by about £60 from £187 to £260 (for 2 bikes)

I was caught doing 97mph in a 70mph zone. I appeared in court and got 5 points with a £540 fine. Its not something that I am proud of as the thought of not being able to ride or drive as a result is not appealing

Re: Has anyone been done for speeding between 70 and 100 on a motorway?

I got done last week, SP30 £60 3pts. Wrote my car off in January too, so my renewal will be up i think! :(

I haven't told my car/bike insurance about my points yet, nor my bike insurance about writing off my car. Do i have to tell them asap or wait until the renewal (bike july, car september)?

Thanks, Tom.

Why 5 points? I thought a speeding fine was 3 points??

diamond 29-04-08 02:25 PM

Re: Has anyone been done for speeding between 70 and 100 on a motorway?

The court awarded my 5 points, you can get a max of 6 points if caught from about 93mph up to 100mph.

Re: Has anyone been done for speeding between 70 and 100 on a motorway?

Oh I see. Better reduce my motorway cruising speed from 96 to 92 then....

I think you will find that if you do not tell them, your insurance will be void if you need it to either make a claim yourself, or someone else claiming against you.

Re: Has anyone been done for speeding between 70 and 100 on a motorway?

i got caught at 117mph two up on my africa twin in 1998 on the m25 by surrey traffic plod at 10.30 at night, I already had an sp30 (fixed camera - DOH!) the copper was seriously impressed that I had managed to get that much out of it.:D they commented on my good lane discipline, indicating and the fact that I knew where they had started following me (but being a **** I still didnt slow down! - DOH! no 2) they said because of my attitude, the condition of my bike, and the good riding (other than the speed) they would normally send me on my way with nothing more than a word of advice, however because i had full leathers etc but my pillion only had jeans, trainers and a paddock jacket they gave me 3 points and £60 fine. best thing was it had never even crossed my mind as the pillion had her own bike and was an experianced rider. made me think. fairest coppers i've ever met.

got caught a few months later wheeliing down barkingside - got a cd10 and £180 (DOH! no 3)

insurance????? I was shafted regardless........

Tell them, soon as. You never know when you'll need insurance. If you wrote your car off and it's nothing to do with the insurance and no third parties or damage to property then I wouldn't even bother telling them. Even though they're not paying out they'll note it and your renewal will suffer as a result IIRC.

As for the other stuff?! WHOAH there boy.

Under 100 is just a fine and points....i got clocked at 111 on M25 and got a 2 month ban, 280 quid fine and points....you takes the risk and pay the consequences if caught. Tend to stay on the lower side of 100 now!

You don't need to tell insurance people until renewal.

SP50 for 80 on a motorway! 3 points and £60 fine. Didn't affect my insurance at all.

I know you work for an insurer, but my policy docs (for the bike at least) state that I must notify my insurer of any claim or points, etc as soon as (if) I get any. Probably best to check your individual policy carefully.

Thats just not fair IMO 80 on a motorway is very tight you either did'nt smile enough or person that gave you the ticket was having a bad day or like me you gave them the finger for harrasing you by tailgating you! not realising the car was full of coppers ooopppps:riding:

Re: Has anyone been done for speeding between 70 and 100 on a motorway?

did 135 with a pair of coppers overtaking then dropping behind and overtaking on an empty motorway some years back. After about 30 miles of it, I pulled off and they waved me goodbye.

Seriously Britain's motorways should be unlimited unless there is an incident when speed should then be enforced. and I don't mean leaving matrix signs saying 50 when there is nothing there

Yeah, that's a very good point, wouldn't want anyone getting into trouble!
