SVBMX Build Thread (99 SV650)

Thought it was about time i started a build thread since its now fairly different to when i first bought it!

http://i.imgur.com/yBcSg9kl.jpg

I’ve had my 99 SV650 (first bike) since October and absolutely love the vtwin power but was never a fan of the looks. So... firstly, i got rid of that horrible half fairing (apologies if you’re a fan but i am not!).

Then next was deciding what to do about the tail. I originally bought all the parts to do a diy tail tidy and make my own seat cowl (which i did), but after seeing a few SV’s with the Ducati Monster seat i decided that was the way to go :)

So i sourced a monster 696 seat and cowl off the bay and went to work on building a sub-frame and undertail to suit. I won’t go into much detail, il let the photos show the work. I made the undertray from sheet aluminium and then wrapped it with 3m carbon fibre effect vinyl. Was gonna paint it black but as i had some vinyl left from wrapping the seat cowl (which il never use again!) i thought it cant hurt to try it, came out pretty good. I also sourced the led tail light, indicators and number plate lights off ebay too.

I had to make some brackets to hold the tank down, which i then used to hook the front of the seat in to. Worked out nicely. And i used the original SV pillion latch/mech to lock the rear of the seat to the sub-frame.

Anyway, after spraying the sub-frame, bolting it on and fixing the cdi, r/r, fuses etc into place, its pretty much finished minus some fresh paint on the cowl.

Oh, i also swapped out the MASSIVE silencer for a “slightly” smaller gp cone! I made a baffle myself and wrapped what i could with Acoustafil, which made a substantial difference and definitely needed! I did start the bike up once without a baffle... unbearable! But now it sounds lovely.

Now, here’s a bunch of photos! :)

Next to do Is the fork swap. Ive already sourced an SRAD 750 front end so that’ll be going on within the next couple of weeks. Then its time for paint.

Let me know what ya think. All comments and suggestions welcome :)

Thanks all :) I used a universal 7" off ebay. I was a little dubious but the quality and output is better than expected.

The fork swap is happening this coming weekend, photos will follow.

I managed to get a quick ride out yesterday for the first time since i'd finished the naked and tail conversion, and with the new exhaust/baffle... super happy with it. Tail felt solid and the exhaust sounds awesome! I am fully in love with my bike right now :P ha!

Good effort!

Although I can't help but think that seat angle is quite harsh! Looks like a steep angle down in to a tight squeeze of you get my meaning lol

Can't wait to see the shiny front end!!

Ha, it does squeeze the beans a little but its not too bad. Not as bad as it looks!!

Right, been having a think about paint today. I'd like to keep it blue but a darker shade than standard, perhaps with a white stripe. Something like this, maybe...

Thoughts?

I quite like the idea, Puny's Street looks lovely with the blue and white.

Re: SVBMX Build Thread

Yep it would look cool, although similar to the pointy colour scheme with that stripe

Blue and stripe looks good. I agree on the angle but was too polite to say anything given the work that's gone into it :)

I really love the look of the tail angle but I agree, is a bit steep as far as my junk is concerned!! Although, to be honest, I only really felt the squeeze when stationary with my feet down. Once they were up on the pegs, head down and rolling it was no longer an issue :D

UPDATE...

Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to fit the new front end this weekend. My step farth mocked up the front end (as I'm keeping the parts at his workshop) to find one of the forks were damaged so had to source a replacement. Managed to do so but won't arrive till Tuesday so it's put back to next weekend. So instead I decided to tackle my current lack of clocks!

I've been trying to decide what to do, and as funds are a little low at the mo il be using my phone as a gps speedo until I can decide and afford a more permanent solution.

So, I made a mounting plate and a cover to slide on over the phone for abit of protection from the elements. And I've also added led warning lights to replace the ones I've lost from the original cluster, just gotta work out how to wire them in from the original loom. The only thing I won't have is RPM but that doesn't bother me too much.

This is what I've made, seems to hold up well and the gps speedo app I'm using works well too :)

I decided today was the day to take the bike for its first ride into work. 7am this morning, looked out the window, all was dry and bright. Weather forecast said dry all day. Got kitted up, set off, got 5 minutes down the road... Hammered it down!!!!! Damn it! Was desperately trying to avoid a wet ride until i got a rear hugger for it.

On the plus side, my phone (somehow!) remained completely dry :P

Really like the phone idea as a speedo. How is it in bright sunshine?

So far so good :) No issues with sunlight. I have the phone brightness maxed out. But i guess you could make some kind of small visor for it to shield the screen if you had to.

SRAD forks are going on tomorrow morning. Id like to mention that my step farth, Chris Tombleson (some of you may know as owner of "Grumpy 1260 Performance Spares" and previously "Straightline Racing + The Two Wheel Centre") has provided me with all the parts for the front end swap as well as the bike itself. So huge thanks to him.

Il be using his workshop (and his expertise) to fit the front end. Hopefully il get some photos on here by tomorrow evening providing all goes smoothly! Im hoping it does, im potentially having a ride out to Cadwell on sunday :)

That's bloomin handy. Front end swap is relatively easy, I've done 2, although all the hard work had been done for me, speedo sensor, lock stops etc etc.

When I did the last one on my curvy, I used the special top bearing (TWF) and to take the headstock bearing cup out easier in the future, I cut a slot/groove where the race sits.

Its done :) The front end has been fitted. Was all pretty straight forward.

Super happy with it. We had to bodge my phone mount back on so i could ride it home! But ive decided to ditch the phone gps speedo idea (as well as it works) and ive gone ahead and purchased a KOSO DL-03SR Multifunction Gauge with the gps speedo sensor. So that'll be fitted as soon as it arrives :)

Hope ya like

Nah im happy with the swing arm as it is. I mean, its not the best looking swing arm but i also dont think any other swing arms would suit it. Ive seen a few conversions whilst googling and i just dont think any of them looks right. Especially single sided.. not a fan!

Yeah, the old mans got a banging setup. Certainly made the front swap easy.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys :)

Next i wanna try mount my headlight abit closer to the forks. Im thinking a tracker style aluminium plate mounted flush to the forks and then chopping the headlight casing to the correct angle and mounting that to the plate.. If that makes sense?!

This kinda thing (excuse my dodgy mspaint photoshopping!)...

Haha yeah its cruel isn't it. Can't see how the stock front end when sold will pay for much gixxer stuff.

Just had this little beauty turn up :)

http://i.imgur.com/a1Qzewvl.jpg

Im hoping to be able to mount it in the back of the headlight casing if there's gonna be enough left after i've butchered it to move it further between the fork legs! We shall see!! If not, il be making a bracket to mount it as flush with the level of the top yoke as poss.

Looks good, out of interest, what have you told your insurance company? My insurance almost doubled when I told them I had a GSXR front end.
