Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Am thinking of booking one of these. I've ridden Cadwell a number of times, it's great fun of course. Never been to Donnington, it's £189 vs. 115 for Cadwell. What do you reckon? It looks more fast and flowing so more like Silverstone, which is very different to Cadwell but enjoyable in other ways, even with 80bhp.

Hi Johnny, I'd be up for a track day round then.
Just looked at the donni circuit, looking at the length of it and moderate curves I'm a bit worried I'd just be nailed from all angles by inline 4s.

I could definitely be talked into it...but think I'd prefer Cadwell at that price. May be try Donnington if there's a deal in the future:fish:

Oh scrap that, just looked it up - looks like it's a 98db limit which would make me very hesitant to book Donington. Mine blows 103-105db depending on how forgiving they are on me under revving, I think even with a baffle it would be cutting it fine.

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Is it? I hadn't even looked. Are you up for Cadwell then? Re. the type of track at Donny, I've ridden Silverstone a few times, both the International (southern half) and full GP, and it's great fun. Yeah you get killed on the straights but even a slowish bike like the SV can still be fun there. Last tiem I was there there was a silver pointy and blow me they knew their way around, left me for dead - that's the first time another SV has left me behind, not counting my mate's SV700 piloted by a psycho. At Cadwell of course you can mix it with just about anyone if your nuts are big enough! Anyhoo am going to book Cadwell in the inters. What do you think?

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

That’s interesting , I’d heard not to attempt silverstone on the Sv for lack of bends - maybe listening to the wrong folk !
Yes I’m up for that , I’ll book on after pay day . I’d love to join another Sv in inters but I’m not massively track proficient so think I’ll book on novice then ask to move up if they deem me worthy

Donnington and also mallory are local to me so I've been looking to book in a date to take the sv400. I'll have even less power but that's not the point. It's about fun and honing your own skill :-)

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Mallory is okay but I don't think I'll go back, massive right-hander but a fairly short track. TBH after quite a few track days where there are always people faster than you, I just tune out the big bikes and try to find someone to have a dust-up with. Silverstone has plenty of bends, I think the full track is better but it's looong so you take time to learn it all, but even the International is fun and you get to use Hangar Straight, which is about 30-40% longer than Cadwell's straights. 12 seconds of flat out screaming. I went neck and neck down there once against a GSXR600 hire bike, they weren't using all the revs and braked early, I'm gonna take that one though! Very wide too, twice as wide as Cadwell.
Dave, up to you, I don't know if they move people much and the inters tends to book up first, not many people want to mix it with the fast group in reality. I was put in fast at Silverstone once, they go for it, it's a big track, and yes they were fast, but well behaved and better riders than inters. Less passing space at Cadwell though, I don't want to get in peoples' way, I may have done a few but I'm not that fast really.

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Apologies if this is irrelevant, i used to race many moons ago,and out of any tracks suggested I'd do cadwell park, especially if its the full circuit.,way more fun on something like an sv. I only did Donnington on Yamahas launch of the last Fzr600(showing my age). Found it was too long(if full circuit) to learn in a couple of sessions(though i am a bit thick!)
Had the terrifying pleasure of being taken round the track on the back of a yzf750 with Jim Moody at the helm,i never knew a bike could lean over that far or go that fast (especially 2 up). Made me realise that being mid pack in club racing is a world apart from the top guys.
Whichever you choose,have fun.

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Yep full circuit. I did the half circuit many moons ago, they don't seem to offer that any more, that I've seen. I remember it being a same about not riding the Mountain, and the nasty step down half way round the improvised hairpin.
I had one day at the full Brands circuit, know what you mean about length, I guess with Silverstone I'd been a couple of times on the International before the GP so knew part of it. At Brands though I also spent a large part of the day finding my way around. Didn't help that people were riding like morons, and it's a track that favours power even more - the exits of the bends open up like nothing I've seen before.

I've booked in the inters for 20th at Cadwell. I've got a blue curvy with loads of stickers on the front end (track plastics) and an old blue pickup truck. Just need to figure out now what picture to put on my number plate for the day! Maybe Trump Baby.

Hi Johnny

I'm still undecided as to what group to book on to! Went lastnight and it was an absolute sh*tshow - never do an evening group unless you're camping and it's a bonus session. We did a sighting session, another session and then someone came off and they cancelled the evening - was supposed to be 4-5 sessions! Obviously hope the bloke is okay but he was up and about so I got the impression the staff are just waiting for hometime on an evening one.

Most annoyingly I'd raced to get there with not a lot of fuel so filled up with their gold tainted £1.60 per litre stuff only for it to be called off.

Anyway completely digress, the session I did have felt pretty good so I might locate my testicles and book onto inters.

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Wow, who was the organizer, No Limits? I've done one evening once, which was at Cadwell, it went fine and as it was a rare open pitlane and undersubscribed, we actually got quite a few sessions in (20mins on/20mins off). How many times have you ridden there? The novices can be very slow there I find, as it's a technical track and a lot of the bends are blind. Inters can be the usual mixture or people who know what a racing line is, and nutjobs, but most of the time I've found the standard of riding to be not too bad. I think there are a lot of regulars. Not been for a few years now so looking forward to it. I always take a couple of sessions to loosen up (I'm for ever being left behind in sighting and having to gun it down the straights, they do go off a bit quick for 9am though). I then get faster as the day goes on, whereas some people seem to go off like a scalded cat from the first session.

It was MSVT. Maybe it was a big emergency and they didn't want to announce the circumstances to all their punters, but I suspect not! I'm probably being abit harsh because so many major routes were closed on the way home and it was ****ing it down - took almost 3 hours. I was out of the house 9 hours and got 2 15 minute sessions :smt082

Yep, I'm definitely a gently gently approach! I've ridden there thrice, once years ago and I had real trouble getting my head around the track. Then I swapped bike for a few years and was actually doing very little mileage so I'm much slower than I was. I've come back to the SV this year so did a Novice only day at the start of July - that was a bit of a larf ; I was worried having ridden it before I wouldn't qualify as a novice...I'd say about 80-90% of the participants were on track bikes, with racing slicks, tyre warmers full lot. I was passing the other road going bikes and keeping up with the occasional track bike on that one. And then I've done the two sessions last night - which felt good I was scraping my pegs on the tight right handers and keeping up with the smaller track bikes and passing a few.

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

You don't sound like a novice to me! Yeah all sorts of people book into novices, just so they get some track time, when the other groups are full. The TD organisers should be on it but they're not. One was blatantly rude to me because of being on a slower bike when I was telling them that the way people were riding, someone was going to get hurt, because it was like the race at the start of Ready Player one. I felt vindicated a couple of sessions later when they told everyone off before letting them out on track.

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Hmm possibly a bit of bike snobbery - or just feckless. I think when people are doing that an accidents going to happen. I got stood up a couple of times just as I was leaning in last time . Could compose myself and lean it back in but I guess if I was any more nervous on my bike I might have panicked/ got target fixation and run off

Just looking at bookings now - just to check it’s no limits running it on the 20th aug?

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

I took my dashcam out my car and taped it to my wing (just realised it will have got drenched on the way home so that’s probavly the end of it :( )

https://vimeo.com/348839095?utm_sour...campaign=29220

If that doesn’t look dangerously slow for intermediates and you promise I won’t be publicly flogged for holding everyone up I’ll get booked in in inters

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Looks good to me, my lap time is around the same, from looking at vids. Am hoping to borrow a GoPro for the day. You'll be fine, at the very least you're predictable for the genuinely fast people to get around - that's always a problem in the novices, no idea where they'll go, and then they'll just gun it down the straights.

Excellent, I'm on.

Booked into big boys group with you

Dave, how are you getting there? I've got a pickup so will put my bike in the back. Not sure which way you're going, I'm in Tickhill. Could meet you here or at the track.

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Not a bad day, weather mostly behaved. Got knocked down from Inters to Novices by a grumpy No Limits "instructor" who was just razing around the track buzzing people. We frankly tore through half the novices (no great surprise) but I guess it's overtaking practice. A few SVs there, can't remember much! A yellow curvy and a blue pointy.

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Good day, cheers Johnny

Sad news is my stand-in dashcam footage is mostly unusable as it has a setting where it loops every 30 seconds and it interrupts the playback by playing the last second of the previous clip every 30 seconds. I'll be able to cut something together/and or send you bits of you riding for tedious watching...but a bit annoying.

If only there was software or a script I could run that would trim every clip

johnnyrod 21-08-19 07:52 AM

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Pity, my rear facing one is pretty rubbish too, I even had to download Disk Digger to recover a couple of the clips from the SD card. There's a lot of vibration, not sure there's much worth having. A quick look at the GoPro was okay, then lens is a bit too wide angle so a lot of people are specs on the horizon but I'll go through it more later on.

Dave20046 21-08-19 09:52 AM

Re: Cadwell or Donny, 20th August

Ah well we knew anything on the camera would have been bonus

All is not lost, I found a switch that's let me make a script trimming the first second off every 30 second clip and then I can just whack them all into movie maker to join it all into one movie per session.
A little test seemed to work but I think it'll take hours to trim hundred of clips. I'll post them up when ready
