AR11 How?
Ok I know its 6 months away but how about a group ride down for those that are going?
My thoughts were a main meet up at 12-1pm in Moffat then hug the M74/M6 using A/B roads all the way down. This would take us 3.5-4hrs including fag, pee and cuppa stops. Route: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...28,3.56781&z=9 I’m planning on doing the route on one of my sunday bimbles in the summer. Lance |
Re: AR11 How?
Psssst....from Penrith go down the Kirkstone Pass into Windermere, from there take the A5074 and join back up with the A590. Only adds another 10 mile and 15-20 mins and tis much better than the A6

Re: AR11 How?
Cheers for that buddy :thumleft:
I kid you not, I've zoomed once to see how the road looks and look what I've found: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...&cbp=12,0,,0,5  Anyone on here? :) |
Re: AR11 How?
Haha whoever it is, I fancy his chances against the porkabusa on those roads

Re: AR11 How?
Sounds like a cunning plan, Sign me up. I already looked at a route from Gretna to the AR and looked pretty much alike. Kirkstone pass could be a nice detour - weather dependant!

Re: AR11 How?
If I can go I'll surely join you. :)

Re: AR11 How?
i had considered going along the Kendal/Windermere road but my plan was to stop off at McDonald's in Penrith for a cuppa and a break then head straight down to the site so as we got there for T time which would allow for people setting up tents etc.etc then getting something to eat before the mayhem of socialising/drinkypoos.
but if people want we could do the detour from Penrith down the Ullswater/Windermere road which would only add about another 10-20mins then thats fine by me, as i would personally prefer that. my reasoning for hugging the motorways is that if anyone gets board or its pizzing down its just a quick turn off then a blast down to the camp site. on the day i will be in no hurry (mainly sticking to speed limits) so it will be a leisurely pace all the way. if you prefer just to 'get there' then its probably not for you. Re: AR11 How?
if i was going i would tag along on that route but i'm not so i can't (damn work)
|
Re: AR11 How?
Not sure I'm going to make this but never say never and if I am - i might just join you!

Re: AR11 How?
I was going to do a similar route but take the A689 to Alston then the A686 to penrith. Both roads are lovely as I used them on my Cadwell park run and coming down the side of the pennines is wonderful worth the extra wee jaunt. It'd be really nice to do it as a group!!!

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...4,3.545837&z=9 i'm game. with both alterations its only added and extra 43 or so miles and an extra hour or so. we will also have to fill up at Penrith to be on the safe side. |
Re: AR11 How?
Please let me know the route, I want Border Control to be well informed, and have plenty of rubber gloves.
I sneaked across last week, and sneaked back with some whisky. Although Kilted Ginger and I stashed a few away Thursday night. |
Re: AR11 How?
Just be aware if yer off down the kirkstone etc, or up it, with a load of gear ont back it be a tad tiring.

Re: AR11 How?
To be honest with you guys, I personally prefer a "spirited" ride over Shap than dodging the caravans and tourists on the Kirkstone. If there is a group of you mid summer you are bound to find the Kirkstone hard work at certain times.
But if you do go that way, park up on the grass banking across from the Kirkstone pub to get a good photo or two of your bikes with the lake in the distance and enjoy the rant of the landlord. |

Re: AR11 How?
Don't worry - if you take the back way in, you can avoid sullying your steeds with Lancashire air...

Re: AR11 How?
does that mean I won't be subject to border control as essentially i'm going back to the fatherland???

Re: AR11 How?
nice route Ralph.
at the end of the day its up to the group to decide. i'm game for doing any route on the day as its a day out. |
Re: AR11 How?
Me and the bro did Shap and the Kirkstone the other weekend, Shap was great apart from I could not keep up with him on the 1198. The kirkstone was full of potholes and those repaired were badly done. Same with the road between Sedbergh and the Bridge
