Ever taken a picture that has surprised you?

We had a thunderstorm brewing the other day & when I went into the yard at work we had bright sunshine, but black clouds all around. When I put the pic up on Facebook, people said how good it was. It was just one of those, phone out, take pic, but it just worked :)
Anybody else had one of those moments?

Haven't got any examples to hand but most of my "decent" ones are accidental. I don't plan a shot much and just take and see what looks good in the end. My process for identifying potential good ones is take the card back home, stick them on the TV and see which ones get a reaction :-)

Nice shot BTW! :D

I was surprised how amusingly this photo came out. They look totally naked, but they're not.

On a more serious note I was surprised how well this one came out too considering it was just an evening/night with friends and I took a camera with me and took loads of random photos.

I was surprised by how well this one turned out. It's totally unedited (apart from resizing and converting to jpeg)

at the snowbombing festival in mayrhofen, austria. Craig david was posing for me in this pic when a streaker ran past...

craig david's hands are still doing the 'W' gesture, only split in half :)

edit: and david blaine is in the background.

This surprised me as i took it with a Pentax dslr when i first got into dslrs. It was taken with a manual 400mm Tokina lens i got cheap on ebay and also a tele converter was used. All hand held and was surprised how well it came out!

Is it the small lump of clouds in the middle of pic?

Re: Ever taken a picture that has surprised you?

I think it looks like a face in shadow, lit from the right.
The small clump forming the lower left (cloudmans left) jaw.

Maybe a mummy as there is a band of cloud that could be a bandage over the nose.

Possibly robocloud?

This was taken at the cricket a couple of years ago. I saw a streaker run out onto the field, grabbed the camera and managed to squeeze one photo off...not a bad effort eh? :p

I took this one while drunk on holiday in South Africa. Had only just got the camera and didn't know what I was doing

And also I like this pretty spontaneous one for the matrix like action

When we took delivery of the first pink cricket balls at Lord's I nipped outside and took this one of a ball with the Lord's Pavilion in the background. A few hours later the media got wind of us trialling pink cricket balls and everyone wanted a photo. My image was used all around the world - and it really was a quick snap with no set up as I didn't have time.

I was told it's the really fine african sand fragments floating in the air... I've no reason doubt that unless someone else knows otherwise?

I heard something like that too. We were in Cape Town though so not sure if it is the same reason. Whatever the reason though, they are epic. I'm hoping for more of the same in Bali in a couple of weeks.

I like that a lot. Good bocher as my mate would say (something like that anyway). Just means the background is blurred & a sharp foreground. :smt017

Bokeh - the quality characteristic of the out of focus bits in the picture. ;)
