Converting Naked to faired?
Hi Guys thinking of adding the upper and lower fairings to my bike and wondered how easy it is and if to do it at all??

Re: Converting Naked to faired??
Wan't someone on here doing the opposite last week? Perhaps you should get together!

Re: Converting Naked to faired??
I think I'd happily swap if you wanted. I have half-faired curvy - GCBlue, but that wouldn't make a diff, as your respraying anyway. Only issue I see, is my RHS fairing panel has couple of cracks.
Not sure how big a job it would be, and what bits would need to be swapped. |
Re: Converting Naked to faired??
just for a reminder on this thread the conversion was done and it's fairly straight forward. If anyone wants any advice please feel free to ask me.

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
The RS fairing looks better than standard curvy fairing how easy would it be to fit a RS fairing?
Would I need a SV or RS front subframe? |

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
so you mean walk next door and ask the local welder to make something custom to fit the SV clocks and as much sv as possible and the RS fairing.
And would i need to use clip-ons instead of my bandit bars? |

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
Ok then i don't like the riding position of a SV with clip-ons. so I might not make it faired.

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
To anyone out there - It would be awesome to see another post (just like liam simpsons polishing thread) that showed a naked being converted to a faired and vice versa. (I think so anyway - anyone else agree?)

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
preferably a pointy :)

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
I'm sort of in the process of converting from Fair to Naked, but not out of choice. Bike went for a spin and cracked some of the fairing :( Really should sort it out but I've been lazy.
Don't suppose the old clocks are for sale? |
Re: Converting Naked to faired??
Hi I’m brand new to riding and my first bike is 2007 sv650 and I want to I want to convert to a faired. I see a fairing kit but don’t what else I would need(brackets, bolts, etc.). Any advice would be appreciated

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
Welcome BigD, It would be a lot of hassle and cost, not worth it IMHO.
People usually go the other way, the faired ones are pretty common, nakeds not so much. |
Re: Converting Naked to faired?
If you're after wind protection then contrary to what you'd expect the S half faired version doesn't stop you getting hit with wind. It tends to just flow that wind in a certain way. I find I'm getting cleaner air around my head (so less wind noise and buffeting) now I've converted to riser bars on my S version (equivalent to the bars that are on the Naked) and am sitting more upright. That's because when lower down on clip-ons, the fairing was directing the wind straight into my face. The fairing is ok for protecting torso from wind buffeting, but unless you get a really high screen you're not going to escape wind altogether, just change where it goes and what it hits.
If I was you I'd look at a fly screen or screen options for your naked version to channel or control the wind flow and keep the bars etc as they are. Probably not what you want to hear as it sounds like you're set on converting, possibly for aesthetic reasons too? As already mentioned, most people convert from the S clip-ons to risers / more upright bars as the clip-ons can be agony for longer journeys. I've done this recently and am so glad I have. |
Re: Converting Naked to faired?
posted years ago :
" a decent screen - used a Givi screen on my naked curvy. Excellent at keeping climate and schuyt at bay. Only problem was it encouraged silly speeds. Correction - that was no problem. " will try to find pic |
Re: Converting Naked to faired?
there is a simple solution to this. sell the naked and buy a sport version with lowers.
to convert a naked to a sport version is a huge expensive task. |

I'd agree totally with Bibio. The nakeds are slightly rarer and sometimes more in demand so you may end up better off out of the swap. There's plenty of S versions around at the moment at good prices. Look for private sales on Facebook etc. There's some really nice bikes out there that I'd be looking at if I didn't already have one. |
Re: Converting Naked to faired?
Yes it is mainly that I want the look. I’m honestly too new to even understand the wind issues yet. I have only rode a few times as I got my 2007 650 in November and only locally. I saw a good deal and went for it. I like the bike but if I could start over I would have purchased a full faired version but I was impatient. Now that I have it I’m trying to see what the investment is to get it to faired and all that I would need.

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
Ride the one you've got for a while. If possible, test ride one with the clip-ons and I think you'll realise you're better off with what you have.
|
Re: Converting Naked to faired?
When you say test with clip ins you mean fairings or handle bars
|
Re: Converting Naked to faired?
Clip-on handlebars. They're very low on the S version. A lot of people find them painful after about an hour of riding. Ok at 70mph as the wind pressure on your chest lifts weight off your hands, but for slower riding they aren't ideal. I swapped mine out for risers (like you have on your Naked version) so I can ride for longer than an hour. I can now do all day in comfort... apart from the seat, but that's another issue common to them all.

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
who cares what it looks like. its glossy magazines and peer pressure that changes peoples minds. dont get sucked up in the whole tail tidy and mini indicator shizz. its only robbing your pocket and makes absolutely no difference to how the bike rides.
with you being a new rider i would urge you to keep the naked as you WILL drop it or crash it at some point. spend the money where it counts and thats in servicing, better tyres or advanced riding instruction. as Adam said the sit up naked is a lot easier and more of a pleasure to ride. it also helps keep the speed down so could save your licence. |

I'm 5'11" with long arms and my wrists used to KILL me after an hour's riding when I first got the bike. I re-thought the way I sat on the bike and focused on avoiding 'slumping' and keeping my back straight, which made a big difference and stopped my wrists aching. So I could then ride for more than 90 minutes at a time. But then the standard seat made my **** go into a coma after 2 hours riding. So I got a Suzi gel seat from another SVer. I now love my S :smt057 |
Re: Converting Naked to faired?
I bought a faired for the looks, and when I rode a naked I wish I had bought that instead!
Ended up putting riser bars on my S, and retained the fairing because it was too much hassle to remove it. As many have said, stick with the naked and enjoy it, better option for new riders anyway. Whereabouts are you? What type of riding do you do? |
Re: Converting Naked to faired?
The higher bars on a naked take pressure off wrists and at legal UK speeds the wind is not a problem. I fitted a screen to my AL7 and then took it off as it made it much noisier and to be honest made little difference to wind.. I would ride a naked anytime rather than a faired one as I don't do any motorway work and want to keep my licence..

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
I’m in NJ and have not really rode. I got my license and my bike in November and only rode a handful of times on local roads never highway or beyond 2nd gear lol.
Also even though it is naked it seems like it does have clip on bars and I would say a street fighter light. |
Re: Converting Naked to faired?
hhmmm any chance of a picture?

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
How do I put an image?

Re: Converting Naked to faired?
You can click 'go advanced' below the box you type in, then click 'manage attachments' then click 'choose file'. Then select the picture, then click 'upload'
Although every time I do this, regardless of file format or file size, I get told it's an invalid image. This site is archaic for things like this. So your alternative is to sign up to Flikr and upload, then click the share button and copy the 'BBCode' and paste it in a response here. |
