Re: My **** - tail tidy
Excellant work there, Smithers....
you might have to post up your design and a template for folks to download to make their own... 10/10 |
Re: My **** - tail tidy
I'm so jealous of all you "handy" types.
Saved you a few quid and unique too. For those like me I found this on a site yesterday. Apparently in stainless. http://www.motospecialties.com/store...minator%20Kits |
Re: My **** - tail tidy
Top notch job matey! :smt038
|
Re: My **** - tail tidy
Top job. And yes you are quite right, a smaller plate will make the world of difference to the look. A nice 6x4 is what you need.
|
Re: My **** - tail tidy
cheers people.

making it out of stainless would be a better idea, i chose ally as its easy to cut etc but if its not primed and sprayed properly it will corrode up as soon as the road salt touches it. i used the original numberplate bracket simply because it was there, i sanded it down and re sprayed it, then cut the brackets for the indys to bolt onto and they are held on by the same bolts that hold the numberplate one |
Re: My **** - tail tidy
When I get my ar$e in gear I'm thinking of doing a batch of them, powdercoated though. And fitting for anybody who's not a DIY type.

powder coating sounds like a much better way to go. If you wanted a glossy finish applying some sort of lacker would be added protection against corrosion |
Re: My **** - tail tidy
I think the powder coater my ex-work uses acid etches them or something like if you leave it for a few days it's a massively tough finish, way better than even proper alloy paint.
Maybe a deep anodising would be better, but I haven't got the inclination to sit 10 gallons of sulphuric acid in the shed. |
Re: My **** - tail tidy
also its probably better to make it out of 1.5 - 2mm, i used 3 mm and it was a pain in the ar5e to do the little bend in it
i clammed it to the bench and put all my weight on it and it barely moved, i resorted to sitting on it and jumping up and down :D |
Re: My **** - tail tidy
You have never seen the YC school of fabrication.
Bench vice, big hammer, gas torch. |

oow oww and another thing:), on the bit i circled in the pic, you want to bend a slight upwards curve in them so it all sits flush when held up fairing http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSC00676-1.jpg thats all your getting, i dont want to be rendered completely useless ;) |

Re: My **** - tail tidy
Looks good, how did you make it?
|
Re: My **** - tail tidy
printed off the template, stuck it together (bigger than A4), stuck it to a bit of 3mm ally, cut it out with a jigsaw, filed it, bent it and played about untill it fitted perfectly, sanded it with 240 grit paper, cut out and assembled the tail tidy bit using the standard plate bracket, sanded it, riveted the tail tidy to the undertray, primed it with etch primer then sprayed it mat black, fitted mini indicators, wired them up and then fitted number plate
think thats everything :D |
Re: My **** - tail tidy
That looks great.
What did you do about the number plate light? and do you need the reflector for the MOT? |
Re: My **** - tail tidy
Depends who does your MOT's :-P
Welcome |
Re: My **** - tail tidy
i want one! :smt048
|
Re: My **** - tail tidy
Thanks for the welcome.
I have a jigsaw, some metal cutting blades, and enthusiasm. Where can I get the metal? I'd like to try and keep it all sweet regarding the MOT. So I'd at least like to have a light for the number plate (I'm sure if I really needed a reflector, I could just stick one somewhere). |
Re: My **** - tail tidy
i got my ally from a metal stockist round the corner from work, it was an offcut which only get chucked so i asked if i could have it, plus i made something for him few days before :p.
as the the MOT, I'm going to get a smaller plate (not done it yet:oops:) then stick a reflector on the bottom of the standard plate and keep the original and swap them for the MOT's, as for lights, like chris said, wouldn't bother, when you have the lights on the tail light illuminates the plate so the likelihood of you getting pulled for not having one are virtually nill. only bit to be careful is when cutting away the old undertray, my advice to you on this would be cut a little bit then hold up the one you've made and so forth, i got a little trigger happy on the grinder and took to much off but luckily its not noticeable :rabbit: spike wants me to make on for his TZR so we will be posting this up when its done :smt048 |
Re: My **** - tail tidy
can you fit the number plate light to the design? wont pass an MOT without one
