Fuel - Wow... its still dropping

This morning I filled up the bike at 108.9 and saw diesel at 119.9 at Morrisons Horndean, Hampshire. While its still not back below a pound yet I was rather surprised, everywhere else was at 110.9

It was 14.41 L for £15.70, can't remeber the last time it was like that.

Oh and my Till operator was Terri...

£1.14 at Mr Sainsburys this morning for basic unleaded. I've yet to see less than that round here.

My till operator was Glad.

How ironic.

Had to fill the diesel cage last weekend when it nearly ran out on the motorway, 140 pence per litre!! Only put a couple of litres to get off the motorway to a less thieving station.

It's rip-off Britain alright.

Food transportation costs have been down significantly since mid-July, yet the Supermarkets have yet to pass that saving onto the customer. Including at the garage forecourt.

Just be glad you don't live on the Isle of Mull. Petrol was 131.9p a few weeks ago

I haven't bought petrol since beginning of May, but I noticed at my girlfriend's that petrol was down to 113.9p, seems like i missed most of the hike :p

Had 109 at Morrisons today. Even thought to myself 'Christ, that's cheap' until I realised that not it isn't, it;s still a bloody rip off.
Was in Canada a few weeks ago and they were complaining about fuel costs - it was half what it is here!

Move to Australia! Currently around $1.50 a litre which at today's exchange rate is ~70p

At least most fuel providers are bringing the price down, unlike the government who aren't going to bring the duty paid down which would help a hell of a lot.

The best I have seen in London at the moment is 115.9, though this is my route to and from work. I get a little loathed to go travelling off it incase I get lost or just end up find some thats more expensive.

Am I right in thinking that the duty the goverment charge on fuel is a percentage of the cost of the oil, not a fixed amount? Therefore when oil prices go high, the goverment earn more in fuel duty.

Yes.

Even so, it's still a massive increase in a very short period of time. How much was petrol this time last year :?:

Just because it has gone down from extortionate back to seriously expensive, everyone thinks it's nice and cheap again.

Yes, any other method would be stupid...

But then why is there vat on Heating oil, after all is it a luxury to have heat?

DUTY is paid per litre, and then VAT is paid on top, i.e. you pay VAT on the fuel cost AND on the duty, tax on tax.

And don't forget that we pay tax on that duty too - and (if I've read it right), tax on duty = tax on tax = essentially illegal?

Anyway, give it a week or so of staying at 109p/l and all of a sudden that 2% hike will be added into the mix!

NO! DUTY is a fixed amount per litre on vehicle fuel. Hence why that can say it will increase by x pence a litre at budget time (this year's rise postponed). Duty on heating oil is also a fixed amount per litre.

VAT is payable as a percentage of the cost of fuel + duty, so the government does benefit from increased VAT receipts when the price goes up.

Crude oil from the North Sea also pays high rates of tax related to the price, but I'm not sure how this works. Higher oil prices benefit the Treasury here to.

there's quite a few petrol stations near me that are 109.99 for petrol, one of them being Shell which has always seemed to be the cheapest.

114.9 in London is the best I've seen so far.

The full cost of food transport increases was never passed on to the consumer.

I've always noticed the second a drip drops from the pump nozzle into my tank the numbers start adding up. This is even before I have squeezed the lever. Exactly where is the meter reading from

Stu 14-08-08 06:38 PM

Re: Fuel - Wow... its still dropping

Numbers seem to read from the pump. You know when you are full it clicks off, pump stops so numbers stop but if you keep the nozzle compressed it still leaks out a bit? well this was leaking out another litre, painfully slow, like it was gravity feed not pumped. But free is free :D
