Diesel Bikes?

Talking about the cost of commuting into London every day with a friend of mine and he suggested getting a Diesel Millitary bike for the commute to save cash, anyone got any suggeestions or recomendations about that =p.

Having trouble finding good sources of info on Diesle bikes in the UK in English ;), Saw a few models but nothing about anyone selling them without contacting the Companies direct which I may just do.

KTM do a miltary spec off roader and there is always the Royal Enfield Robin, but not really aware of any others.

I know you can personally import the robin, don't know whether the KTM is sold for road use.

Cheers Mark.

We have a few Diesel bikes, every now and again we replace them for various reasons and they tend to go for auction. As to who auctions them I do not know.

There was an article in bike about the enthusiast diesel bike scene in the uk. Perhaps they have some sort of website?

A diesel bike? I'd never drive a diesel car let alone a bike. Sounds hideous. Diesel is one of the most carcinogenic compounds known to man (up there with asbestos)

Re: Diesel Bikes?

So what? The fuels supposed to go in the tank, not used to make your biceps look bigger after training lol

There's a bike based on the kwak KLR that runs on diesel, it's a military one and IMO any fuel benefit will be offset by the problems finding a bike and spares for it, with it being a military based one.

If I was going to do it I'd use a smart car engine and an XJ9 frame chopped about a bit, but lots of dollar for an extra 30mpg... it'd take a long time to pay back and the performance wouldn't be too cracky, especially since a £200 GS500 will run for silly mileage and you can mostly fix them for a tenner.

Yeah, I remember seeing a home-built sports bike with a car engine in it, a wee diesel triple- not sure what it was from, citroen or pug if memory serves but that could be nonsense.

I think the reason the military likes them is that it simplifies your logistics, if you make all your vehicles run on one fuel you need to shift less stuff.

yes, because the sound the car makes and the dangers of consuming the fuel are top priorities if you're about 6 years old;)

Smart car TDI, at least the one I saw was. It looked heavy. (because that means a lot lol)

Possibly Witham SV. They do a load of ex-military auctions. Plenty of bargains to be had (and no, I'm not affiliated with them in any way).

I believe it's that and also because as it's less refined than petrol, it's easier to come by out in the sticks in oil producing countries too.

As others have said, unless your going to be doing huge mileage on the bike a ratty petrol bike with worse MPG but a lower cost to buy will almost certainly work out cheaper.

My dad builds diesel Royal Enfields using 406cc engines in the bullet frame. 60mph tops, but does about 170mpg!

Where does he build them as I though Royal Enfield was just in India, and does he get hold of second hand models too?

trinyquist 16-10-08 10:08 AM

Re: Diesel Bikes?

He imports them from India, builds them in the garage at home (its a big garage) and then sells them. He can get hold of second hand bikes, restored, reconditioned, pretty much anything. He can also build to order.

Give him a ring, he's a very friendly bloke who'll will tell you anything you need to know about them!

I looked at those, but I'd really want some performance.

Might buy a blown up smartcar engine and see what can be done. TIG welder and a hammer... can't be that hard :-D
