URGENT Insurance Question
All,
As some may know, we got rid of Lily's bike, as a result, we have decided to see about adding Lily to my policy so she can ride in the summer or do part of the AR etc. Having spoken to Express who in turn has spoken to the underwriter. The underwriters are saying that as they know I am on a full licence and Lily is on a restricted, they are not willing to allow us to use the bike and simply swap the ECU over as and when. So I then said, fine I will restrict it all the time. The underwriter has then said they wouldn't allow us to restrict via ECU as they know we could easily swap, but said and I quote!!! "You must restrict using full dealer installed FI International kit with certificate which must be carried out prior to us accepting any policy changes". Can anyone think of anyway around this? I do not want to pay for a rubbish restriction when we already have the standard 33bhp ECU in our garage. Financially, to add Lily will cost an additional £36.30 on the insurance (as I am also dropping from fully comp to TPFT aswell as wanting to add Lily). The cost to restrict is what??? £150 plus? However, stick as is with changes to TPFT etc then I get back £76.13...... This is really annoying as I want Lily to get practice over the summer using my bike ready for buying her a bike next year. |
Re: URGENT Insurance Question
only thing i can think of is a seperate policy
|
Re: URGENT Insurance Question
find a different insurance company ? that sounds fricken ridiculous...
|
Re: URGENT Insurance Question
Can't do different insurer as I am only half way through my policy, will cost too much to cancel.
|
Re: URGENT Insurance Question
how about lily getting her own ins.
although that wont be as cheap |
Re: URGENT Insurance Question
I'm not even sure if it's legal to have the same bike insured twice by different policies as what happens if it gets stolen? Which comany would be liable? Tricky.
Thats a tough one mate. You may end up having to go down the garrage route. Could you take it to someone you know who could sort you out a certificate without the full cost (as you already have the ECU!!!) |

Re: URGENT Insurance Question
pay for the F1 restriction & Cert... Rip out the restrictors and use the ECU restriction.. In the event of a clain it wouldn't be a problem as the bike is retricted and Lily will be riding in accordance with her certificate. I cannot see how they can insist on the F1 kit....
or sack them and add her on a new policy |

I can see the insurers point of view; irrespective of what you will actually do, what would be the first thing you would think if someone told you that they intended swapping the ECU everytime you swapped rider. Doesn't make it any less infuriating though. Without knowing your personal circumstances, or why you sold Lily's bike so quickly after her gettting it, would an alternative not be to get her another bike now, just a hack to run around on that is only worth a few hundered quid? Would mean she could get experience, build her own no claims and would save the risk of her dropping your bike when only covered TPFT. If not, I'd be inclined to go back to Express and ask them why they won't accept your restricted ECU when the law will. If they still decline I'd cancel the policy and go elsewhere if you can find something that meets your needs, as Fizz suggested. Yes, you may lose out by cancelling the policy, but how much are all these amendments going to cost anyway? |

Re: URGENT Insurance Question
The amendments are only going to cost £36.30 as the insurance is being dropped down to TPFT anyway. I am dropping the insurance down regardless as I wont be commuting on the bike anymore.

Tricky... any chance you could find a few hundred quid and get lily a bike of her own again...
I bet you could pick up a cheap curvy SV for not much cash at the moment. Still spending out money though I guess which is what you're trying to avoid. |
Re: URGENT Insurance Question
Cheers for the words guys, but just had a long chat with Lily.......
Financially we can't really afford to do much at the moment, due to our wedding coming up. Hence the reason for selling her bike so soon on the first place. Therefore Lily has agreed (although she is not happy) that we will carry out the changes with just me on the policy and will keep our eyes open for a 125 towards the end of the year which she could use up till her restricted licence ends, will then look at getting her unrestricted bike of her choice next summer. Its a sad day as we didn't envisage this problem. I am seriously cheesed off and want to bash the insurance companies heads!!!! :( |
Re: URGENT Insurance Question
Drew- Its a lose/ lose situation
I don't want you to have to ride a rescrited bike! And that is what the insurance company is looking for! Drop it down, change the address etc, have the rebate! You know my views on the SV and what i don't like about it and what i do........ and you also know what bike I want! Only got 18 months left! ;) |

Drew - what about just letting your policy run and then finding another insurance company once renewal time comes up. I dont see how the FI Internal kit makes any difference, its still removable so you could in theory still swap that on and off, just takes a bit longer. |

I accept there are other issues involved, but Suzuki might not see it that way if their partner is refusing to insure their customer's bikes for such a reason and Express might realise that too... |

I know of a perfect bike just for you Lil
|
Re: URGENT Insurance Question
Tis true though, Lily sat on every bike, and I mean every bike at the NEC. The only ones she really felt comfortable on (yes we know she would need to test ride them......so I will no doubt get a test ride for a day...Woo Hoo) were the GSXR600 and the CBR600RR.

Re: URGENT Insurance Question
Considering most of both of our family's hate the fact we LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE riding a motorbike, I see that we may get many requests along the lines of, "Can I buy you some towels?"
