Minging header pipe
On my first bike which was an SV650s, my next bike which was a DL1000 and my current bike which is an SV1000s, the front exhaust header pipe always ended up being a rusty red, brown mess. WD40 merely produces an exciting cloud of smoke before the next ride. What is the advice of the forum please?

Re: Minging header pipe
barkeeps friend?
think that's what they use.....not my cup of tea |
Re: Minging header pipe
I used autosol and a scouring pad, but it quickly goes brown again.
You don't notice so much if the rest of your bike is a brown mess too :p |
Re: Minging header pipe
Autosol and a lot of this:- :toss:
|
Re: Minging header pipe
Barkeepers friend (it's a cleaning powder you mix with water to form a paste, asda have it), very fine wet and dry or wire wool, then autosol to polish.
|
Re: Minging header pipe
fender extender to prevent water spray.... and lots of polishing.....
|
Re: Minging header pipe
Leave it brown and manky and spend your time riding not polishing.
|
Re: Minging header pipe
spent 5 minutes on mine this afternoon with some autoglym metal polish.....came up nice and shiny again.

Re: Minging header pipe
just look at my signature ;-)
My first tip was barkeepers friend, then last week I found tip number two! I also have a fetish for shiny downpipes..oo er :-) |
Re: Minging header pipe
Well, if the video on the JML website is to be believed then it should do the job - thanks for the advice one and all!

Re: Minging header pipe
For really gammy downpipes. Do the Barkeepers friend first, mix into a paste and slap it on..leave it for the time it takes to have a brew. Then get a wet green scourer and scrub. You'll find a load of brown poo stuff will come off with this, and leave the pipe quite smooth.
Then try Doktor Power. These two only get rid of the brown crap welded onto your pipe. You should start to get a shine and reallly bad parts will go a kind of black colour(don't worry its fine) After that its wet n dry 800, 1200 and autosol with fine wire wool. I'm halfway through this process on the third bike in the shed. Its tried and tested method, both my SVs have mirror pipes:-) |
Re: Minging header pipe
I'm a bit of a lazy ar$e, (hence the name) so the less elbow grease required the better - has anyone tried any polishing powertools? Maybe a dremel with some adapter kit?
|
Re: Minging header pipe
You have to be careful with a dremel. I nearly put a hole in Suzys pipe. I did devise a way of sticking wet n dry discs on one of the attachements, to try sanding some of the really bad bits off. Only thing was, with that was I still had to go and do it again by hand, as it did it in stripes!
If I had a garage I'd do what Lissa does and get a bench grinder or polishing wheel. Rip the whole system off and do it properly. I did have Suzys off when I did hers, but it was all by hand or experimenting with the dremel, before I cheated with the cheap stuff from Asda 8) |

NO!!!!! :-) One bike this week then back to work. You have no chance! |
Re: Minging header pipe
I will bring them up anyway, you will not be able to resist the urge to put a shine on them...
Or I'll just PJ1 em... |
Re: Minging header pipe
You PJ! them, ruin them see if I care ;-)
You don't PJ1 as system like that, you'll be frowned at. Besides they're better grade stainless than the SV so even a half hearted attmept by you should see them right |

Re: Minging header pipe
I just avoid looking at mine. There's a clean spot on the tank where my knees have rubbed the dirt off, I look there.
