Unusual fears or phobias

Whilst having a chat with some friends the topic of "what are you scared of" came up.

So the usual stuff came out: Spiders, heights, snakes, dying and so on.

Then what did I go and do? I mentioned a fear I 'used to' have when I used to compete in swimming galas. So there I was swimming a length and I spot the drain grating at the bottom of the pool, my imagination goes wild, I imagine a shark coming out of the drain and chasing me. :help: This still happens, I have to close my eyes over them when I swim now!

If you think thats odd, I also have a fear of jacuzees (sp?) but only when the bubbles are on, I have to be able to see the bottom overwise the sharks might get me! :smt089

Don't know what it is about sharks, maybe its the mechanical toy shark I used to have in the bath when I was little.

Has anyone else got an irrational fear like me or am I just as odd as my friends thought?

:stupid:

Dead people ...... when I have to search people (at work it's not my sadistic hobby) who have died I have a fear of what they will do. Everytime I go to one I dread the family being there when I have to do it as one day they are gonna do summat I dont expect and I will run a mile screaming.

And they do weird stuff ..... if you dont know already you dont need to know LOL

I don't envy that job, although the holiday sounds good ;)

seafood. can't touch it, can't go too near it, can't look at it. Makes me throw up. If someone has touched seafood and then goes to prepare something like a sandwich for me, I can't eat it cos it's been contaminated.

I was in a pub in whitby having sausage and gravy in a yorkshire pudding once. A bit of prawn had got in there somehow but I didn't realise. I took one bite and tasted the prawn oil spreading through my mouth - I spat it out then ran to toilet with my hands on my mouth trying not to let the vomit come out. Prolly one of the worst moments of my life.

I'm a lot better than I used to be, so fish and chips or fillets of fish are kind of ok, but stuff like shellfish, lobsters, muscles, fish with skin & heads on, etc - I run a mile.. dirty b*stards. Makin me ill just thinkin about it

I am exactly the same with seafood. Can't even pick it up in the supermarket! :( I hate the stuff.

I would have freaked out if i found a prawn in my food too. ewwwww

Re: Unusual fears or phobias

it was in my mouth! ARGH!!!! I'm outta here lol

I've met quite a few people with the same dislike/hatred/phobia/outright mortal fear of seafood so it doesn't seem that uncommon thankfully :)

there is some logic to it. Most seafood smells like a sewer or p*ss, and alot of it looks like mucus/dead rotting stuff - so why on earth would anyone think "oooh I'll put this in me mouth, yum yum yum"....

They're horrid things, I squished one last night that dared to emerge from under the toilet mat....always feel so bloody guilty when I do it though!

Can understand the seafood thing, can't stand it either but wouldn't call it a fear, just an intense disliking.

I'm really scared of putting my head underwater, hate the sound of water in my ears. Had a bad experience in the pool when I first went swimming at school, ever since my confidence in water has plummeted :-(

cos its delicious :D i love seafood, gimme a crab and a mallet and watch me go!

I hate wasps. And they know it. I used to rent a room and at the end of one summer, there was a nest in the roof that had fallen. I'd wake up to 4 or 5 of the blighters drowsily crawling round the floor. One dropped on my pillow in the middle of the night - which i heard, grabbed the light switch and ran!

And just last night i reached for my dressing gown and accidentally squished a really big one, which was sat on it. It didn't sting me but i can still feel where it touched my hand.

Oddly enough, being stung isn't the issue - been stung a few times and its just not that bad.

Re: Unusual fears or phobias

I've always had a thing about people being sick.

When I was a kid and I was being sick I had to shut my eyes, put my index fingers in my ears and pinch my nose with my two little fingers.
And whenever anybody else was sick I panciked and did one down stairs and put the TV on rather loud.

Not as bad as I used to be now lol. Still not too keen on it though. Whenever I'm sick now I'm drunk anyway (only, twice!) so it doesn't bother me.

This one will surprise you. I use to have a fear of motorbikes.

Not just motorbikes on the road being ridden normally, but ones being used anti-socially. When I was a kid (about 9/10 I think) I was walking through a field up to football practice, which was at the far end of the field.

Some youths (15/16) had a dirt bike and we're riding about on it as you do. Nowt wrong with that as far as I'm concerned, though I was a bit wary of these guys.

So one guy goes up to the far end of the field where I'm going, turns round and starts to ride towards me, building up to about 40mph. I've no idea what to do so I just freeze and he decides to dodge round me literally at the last possible moment. Passing me only a foot or so from my arm. I bricked it and ran upto the football field in tears.

For a good few years I shat myself everytime I saw/heard bikes being ridden how and where they shouldn't be, until my Dad got me on the back of his.

I think that's pretty much it.

 only if you explain why I'll regret it lol

edit: oh if you mean for practical jokes and the like, an ex mate I used to live with once cooked a meal for me and vic and put oyster sauce in it even though he knew how bad i was with it all. He had two black eyes and I destroyed his room (smashed telly and his bed was in bits). He never did it again :)

I really dont like needles. I remember being about 9/10 and i had a bloodtest... i dont think ive ever screamed so much in my life. Since then ive had two more injections, one when i was 11 (menijitis) i was just shaking the whole way to the school but i think i just about managed to not cry. I also had the BCG jab in year 8, so i was 13. I didnt mind that one as much although i couldnt eat all day and its all i was thinking about. I had the biggest adrenaline rush lining up to have it, so much energy but it was so scary. It hurt like **** but i didnt shed a tear.
I just hate the idea of the needle peircing my skin.

I have a completely irrational fear of anyone medical. Doctors, nurses, anyone like that. I proper panic if I ever have to see docs about anything, no matter what it is.

Its not really a fear but I cant touch jewellery, rings, chains etc, wierd huh ? dunno why but if the wife asks me to fasten a necklace for her I just cant, dont even like thinking about either, just writing this isnt easy, dont know why I have tbh.

I feel really guilty about my one :-( and i dont mean to make people feel bad :-( But i have a real issue with amputees and stumps

Dunno if its the fear of losing a leg or anything or if its the stump with the puss and ....ok....i cant keep typing .....

Its no offence to the people who are amputees its not about them at all, just the bit they are missing! In fact weirdly enough one of my best mates has only on leg. She lost the other when she was a baby in a lawn mower incident. I didnt even notice for about 6 months until we were in a pub once and i put my hand on her knee (in a non sexual manner might i add :P ) and felt her false leg. Im cool with her tho .....as long as she doesnt show me it!

Funny you mention the drain grate at the bottom of the swimming pool. I remember as kids the competition was always to reach the grate and then defend it from all others (small things please small minds and small kids) - either the teachers or somebody put about the doubtless apocryphal story of how some kid back in the day got his foot stuck in the grate playing just such a game and drowned. I wouldn't say it's into phobia territory but I still double take and kind of try to avoid those grates at the bottom of pools.

I 'have' Ichthyophobia, which is the fear of fish and Ostraconophobia, which is the fear of shellfish. There is just something about all fish creatures that really gives me the wiggins.

Otherwise, nothing else scares me. Not even things like death or drowning.

I know a few people terrified of cotton wool
My gran's afraid of tea spoons
And one of my mates is terrified of moths and to a lesser extent flutterbys.

Sharks for me too. I grew up in South Africa near the beach and loved going there.....until I saw Jaws the film. After that I thought there were sharks under my bed and in our pool. Since then I can't comfortably swim in the sea unless I can touch the floor, even though I know the chances of being attacked are pretty slim.

My sister in law is terrified of buttons... yep.. the things for doing up your clothes....

don't know why, but she'll freak if she has to touch one... to the extent that none of her clothes have buttons... ever....

I'm slightly claustrophobic. not dark places or stuff like that but more for restriction of my movement.. think it stems from being trapped a couple of times and then recently being strapped to a spinal board for quite a few hours....

Had to have an MRI scan and when they slid me in on the bed, the tube was pressing against my shoulders and was just an inch or so in front of my face... With the prospect of 20 minutes in this tube I freaked and pulled myself out so quick that I broke the bed... oops..

Re: Unusual fears or phobias

It's not that irrational from my perspective, but I have a thing about water in my eyes. That (I think) stems back to me being KO'd by someone's foot in a swimming pool. The last thing I remember about it is water in my eyes, then a load of birds flutterying around my head. :)

Give me goggles & I'm fine. I'm fine in the shower, I'm fine swimming underwater now (though that hasn't always been the case).

I used to be terrible with people spashing in the pool, but since having kids I've got a lot better with that. :)

Everything else, not a problem at all. :)

I hate crossing bridges over dark water. In the daytime, no problems, I'll sit there and gaze at the view or watch fishes, but after dark........

I have NO idea why either, but I get a real shiver down my spine as the wheels go onto that bridge!
