Fuel in air filter housing
Having just removed the air filter to exchange for a new one, there is a small but noticeable amount of fuel inside the housing and on the base of the K&N filter. Is this normal? From the Haynes it seemed it should be dry/ dusty in there. If this is wrong then what is the likely cause?
TIA, am worried now!! Kelly x |
Re: Fuel in air filter housing
you sure it wasn't oil?
try light it with a match, see what happens... |
Re: Fuel in air filter housing
very likely oil thats been vented up the crankcase breather pipe. If you are going to light it make sure there's a video camera running.
p.s. please dont do that |
Re: Fuel in air filter housing
Why are you replacing a K&N filter? It's reusable, just clean it and reoil it. Unless it's damaged of course?

Re: Fuel in air filter housing
And stop doing so many wheelies KJ, thats how the oil/fuel can get up in there too you see.

As said - likely to be oil, petrol probably would have evaporated by the time you got to checking it (I think) Like maviczap says k&n's last forever! They recommend a clean every 50-100k though:roll: |
Re: Fuel in air filter housing
It definitely smelt like fuel but had the consistency of oil so im not gonna worry. Im gonna take your advice and clean and refit the K&N.
I didnt realise they were reuseable, just thought they were expensive, doh! Thats why you guys are so great - im new to all this mechanical stuff and it never crossed my mind to see what was on the bike before ordering another, another lesson learnt. The good news is the bike's fully serviced and raring to go :-) I just need to get rid of my flu :-( |
Re: Fuel in air filter housing
We're here to help. That's saved you £40 at least :p
You'll need some stuff to clean it with, then some oil to re oil it. But much cheaper than a complete new K&N! |

Re: Fuel in air filter housing
It's all right I ain't that clever, I swapped my Sky boxes round yesterday, so I had to get the sky card paired up to the right box. Went through the procedure with Sky and left the box on to adopt the card. It still hadn't adopted the card swap in the afternoon, so I thought it was because I'd not connected the telephone line to the sky box. Went out to homebase bought a telephone line extention, plugged everything in, incl hiding the cable properly.
Phoned sky up again, put the sky card in the slot on the box, then the lady at the end of the phone told me to open up the flap on the sky box and insert the card in the CORRECT slot. Doh! Still it's saved you making an expensive mistake, we've all done it, and I'm happy to help |

Re: Fuel in air filter housing
no, don't clean it with that it's too aggressive... Look for dry cleaning fluid, it's fairly cheap and then give it a little wash with that, then oil the filter...
I've had lots of K&Ns in my cars and bikes and I've rarely cleaned them. |
