join the aa before you break down!
sv650[x], 99[v] 12,000 mls. i was going to the ace cafe, but on the m40 towards central london the bike died. thankfully i had the aa sales number and joined, wait for it.....£139. aa turned up pretty quickly, loaded bike up and took me to a services where we were joined by an aa mechanic. bike is fitted with a datatool alarm which did not work now. aa found a chaffed wire on it so opened up loom and bypassed it. battery had 3.7 volts, so he put a power pack on it and it turned over but would not fire. no spark. no reading on meter from crankshaft sensor so it didnt know when to fire. aa man gave up, had to get home. £99 aa upgrade to get you home, £40 because i was over 50 miles from home, 20 miles at £2 per mile. anyway bike dropped of at bikers in north baddersley near romsey hants for investigation on monday. a rather expensive non breakfast ! anyone with any ideas of whats wrong, feel free to chip in.:(

Re: join the aa before you break down!
Alarms immobiliser stopping it firing up? Just cos he bypassed the alarm doesnt always mean he bypassed the immobiliser too, right?
And for future reference you can by and instant basic membership to the AA from Argos ... only one limitation is that you cant use it on the day of purchase. I know this cos i did it many years ago, left my car where it broke down and then went back to it next day and called the AA and told them how lucky i'd been to think of buying it the day before it broke down, lol. I'm sure they heard that one loads of times by now tho. |
Re: join the aa before you break down!
possibly, he was looking for another wire that was coil related, but couldn,t find it. if i had waited for 24 hrs i would not have to pay the milage charge. you can be wise after the event cant you ?

Anyhoos, I reckon the alarm was possibly not the problem but the wire which sends signal to the crank sensor(?) From memory, I think it's the orange/red wire and goes all the way to the CDI. Hope I'm making some sense lol but I shall try and find a thread of mine for you later as problem sounds similar. Might save you some money at the garage as they wouldn't have to spend ages searching for the problem....and probably still not find it Cheers Ben |
Re: join the aa before you break down!
Battery on 3.7 volts?
Reg recs stuffed. |
Re: join the aa before you break down!
30amp fuse in the alarm??
but that wouldnt affect the battery and it givin out a poor reading |
Re: join the aa before you break down!
YC, reasonable/logical but not necessarily I'd say. I wouldn't be absolutely sure until rectifier is tested.
Cheers Ben |
Re: join the aa before you break down!
Or...make sure you get breakdown recovery as part of your insurance.
I wouldnt have insurance without it |

Re: join the aa before you break down!
I cannot help with your bike issue although i would be concerned at alarms being bypassed and imobillisers etc.
As far as breakdown goes, remember we ride bikes, they can easily be crashed and lots of breakdown covers will not come out to you after a crash, just a thought ;) |
Re: join the aa before you break down!
Word of warning have had so many problems with bikers when my was in waranty let alone out. I would make sure they dont just go ahead and fit new parts and charge you an arm and a leg for it.

When I used Ebikes insurance they sent out the RAC. The man arrived and said yup I cant fix it, so i'll call the bike recovery unit. This keeps their response times down. With NCi/Rescue my bike.com they send out local people who are suitable for your vehicle. In case anyone isn't aware, in your recovery plan should be a thing called 2nd recovery. So if you break down at night they cant recover you to a dealers or garage. But, they should do this, if you need it, on the next working day. Check your policy to make sure its included as, IMHO, its essential. http://www.ncionline.co.uk/motorcycl...down-cover.asp |
Re: join the aa before you break down!
Hey, I was gonna join the AA but I was on their website and it didn't have a special option for bikes.. So I called and the woman said you just buy a normal policy and that it covers bike too. is that right?
At the moment you can get home start, roadside and relay for £107 and also then £50 back via quidco on that so I was thinking of getting the personal cover so both my bikes are covered (well whichever I am riding anyway) |

Re: join the aa before you break down!
Not entirely, an aerosol can of GT85 can be used instead.
