MTB helmet enquiry

What are the relative merits of the normal bike helmet vs the pot style? Or is the new hybridy style the best. For mountain biking, slowly, by a fat bloke.

As with motorbike helmets I'd say buy the best you can afford and the one that fits you best.

Your best bet for day-to-day MTB'ing is the style of lid with vents & a peak i.e. this style. The peak is more practical than you might think - keeps low branches from hitting you in the face etc. Roadie lids usually don't have the peak...

The p155-pot style lids are more for the dirt jump/freeride crowd who wear lots of baggy stuff and look more like skaters.

Those go down the back a bit more than the normal commuter ones, don't they? Thats what I was thinking of by the hybridy ones.

Yeah I think they do, but having fallen off my MTB in various weird (and hilarious, as my mates would have me believe) ways I'm glad of the extra protection at the back. It also allows for extra adjustment so it fits the shape of your head better. I wouldn't want anything less for trail riding.

Yes, I mean they look better because of it.

Agreed, some of the commuter ones look quite odd.

On that note, you should see my neighbour who cycles to & from the local shops on her shopper/commuter bike and wears a full-face downhill/motocross-style lid!

You'll get better air flow through the normal type of helmet than the p*ss pot style. Important if you are out of shape and having to work hard....

Something like this I would have thought would suit what you want a helmet for.

I'd happily recommend Giro helmets - mine's an '07 Havoc and it's already taken some abuse but still looks and fits as good as the day I bought it.

Personally i'd be very tempted to go for a full on MotoX lid myself. I never think cycle lids are anything more than very, very basic protection.
Just my 2p :)

Full face lids are a different type of riding mate.

I still have a cratoni v1 from my downhill racing but doubt it would be any good after all these years :(

For any kind of distance or for commuting, a full face lid would cook your brain. :smt118

An open face vented lid will protect the head from the forces generated in a fall from a push bike. Do bear in mind that push bike crashes are generally slower and have less force involved than a motor assisted vehicle. Most people do not often get above twenty MPH on the daily commute and those who do are at the fitter, sportier end of the spectrum.

I have not yet come across any push bike helmets that can actually offer any real protection during a collision with a motor vehicle moving at normal road speeds. When being subjected to that kind of force, the helmet will offer damage limitation as opposed to actual injury prevention. :smt065

Push bike helmets do have some of the same materials in them that you find in motorcycle helmets though, expanded Polystyrene is good for energy absorption through crushing, push bike helmets generally have a slightly thinner layer. :chef:

Jump bike lids are designed to have a slightly higher amount of protection than a standard type lid and are often a little sturdier in their construction, so can with stand the bumps and knocks of falling off a little more. :smt022
