I love the front flip helmets and have one of these. :D

http://www.vemarhelmets.it/images/co...ano_aj08_g.jpg
The whole front flips up and it also has a built in retractable sun shade (the red button on the side), so you have sun protection even if you forget your sun glasses. It cost me about £150, two years ago and it has proved to be comfortable even at speed. Only down side is that ear plugs are required if you go above 100mph because the roar from the wind is a loud if you have delicate ears. :smt043

If you want to know more, try here. :salut:

I've got a caberg flip and find it so much easier. easy to talk to other half at lights and yell at inconsiderate cage drivers and pedestrians. I also find i don't have to remove my helmet all the time
Had mine for 4 years and just replacing at the moment - Got a full face as well and defo prefer the flip

I bought a flip front - it was quite heavy and gave me terrible neck ache so I gave up with it and bought a full face Shoei which is much lighter - do miss the flip up bit though.

tbh weight is your issue and time on bike, long tours or dainty people go full face, short sprints or lots of off and back on bike go flip
and yes your other half uses full face as we asked him to stop scaring children by showing his face to often on rideouts :)
luv ya segs

i have both your warmer in full face in the winter, as for the flip face ideal when in a group easier to talk to your mates at lights and you need ear plugs which ever helmet you buy really.

Re: Which lid? to flip or not to flip

I would not have another flip-lid.

I had a caberg V2 which was awesome until I headbutted the floor in it. I then had a caberg trip which was horrible. Internal airflow couldn't have been more wrong, the only place the air was directed was at your eyes, without the side effect of keeping the visor de-fogged.
But by far THE worst thing about the trip was that the lower extremes of your vision, for me the most useful part of your field of view was obscured by the daft shaped chinpiece! Safe or what?!

I would buy another shoei in a heartbeat (XR1000). I've had it a year now and it's still as snug as first week (though it took a few 100 miles to bed in), the visor has only fogged once (in a blizzard of sleet and hail, Yorkshire weather, now we had it tough!!). And it's matt black, so looks great with a black visor on.

But, I would not buy another flip-lid unless I had plenty money to spend. For similar cost you get far improved visibility.

But in the defence of flip-lids it was nice being able to smoke on the move.

I had an matt black Airoh matiise, tbh it wasnt the most expensive of lids, but Id never had a flip front before and was pleasantly surprised, Id have another, although it may be a good idea to get another bike first ;) good luck

I have a Caberg Jutissimo and I like it apart from the noise at speed. Much easier for the days when I wear glasses. And you can apply lipgloss without having to remove the whole helmet which is a very important factor.

I wasn't going to mention that, but that is a very good point. :D Dead handy for trips to work too because it does not smudge your make up on the way there. :smt118

Years ago (before I believed that you had to have a license!:smt077) I had an old FM lid and that was a full face plastic nightmare of a helmet. I swear that the Wasps that bounced off it were hurt less because the plastic was so soft. Would not go back to closed face lids after that piece of rubbish. :smt076

I like full face, you can get them much lighter than flip fronts...and I like a light weight lid.*

(there may well be very lightweight flipfronts but I bet they cost hundreds)

I thought it was because you didn't want women seeing what a real man looked like. ;)

The reason why I'm not 'for' the flip front helmets is the 1 accident I've had I landed on my chest and chin. It made me wonder how much force it would take for the chin piece to flip up in a accident?

Re: Which lid? to flip or not to flip

Personally I would never have a flip helmet. I am in the mind that if you ever had a face-tarmac interface the damn front of it might get ripped off.
Having a full face lid when I came off and had face-tarmac interface made me glad I'd had a full face too.

Besides pretty people need their faces protecting, in such circumstance ;-)

Re: Which lid? to flip or not to flip

I currently swap between the two, although I wear my flip-front more frequently. Like the ladies above said, its handy - in my case, I don't have to take my glasses off to put my lid on.

Re: Which lid? to flip or not to flip

For outright safety and overal comfort, I prefer the normal full-face, lifting-visor only helmet. However, his makes communicating with my pillion very difficult...Miss Alpinestarhero lipreads. I am interested in getting a front-flip lid, so that I can easily talk to her without us having to have a bit of a faff for her to see my lips!

Also, it means I can have a proper good shout at someone in traffic and scare them with my scary face

i don't trust flip front's not to do exactly what their name say's in a face meet's tarmac interface that's just me though so i vote full face lid everytime.

Another vote for not trusting them to not blow apart. I see it as the single most important piece of safety gear, so wouldn't personally want to skimp for the sake of convenience or vanity.

I'm sure I saw a pic online several years back of a guy, fully concious, laying face down (but with his head raised) on a gurney... missing his entire lower jaw. I would not be able to relax with that sort of injury in mind.

Besides - isn't it Seggons who's prone to forgetting to turn in the corners (youtube vids)? Go for the added protection of full-face ;)

Re: Which lid? to flip or not to flip

I had a Schuberth concept (flip), rode in it all the way to PL and back. It wasn't the nicest, lightest, or quietest lid. The thing the annoyed me the most was the fact that the jaw bit was touching my shoulder armour when doing a shoulder check.
But the lid worked perfect when my head hit the top yoke :smt045

I somehow think it was easier to use than the R1 I have now, and it had a collar on the bottom which made it warmer and less draughty.

I've also tried the new c3 (1,57kg) in HG, almost the same weight as the R1 (1,48kg). If someone :santa: gave me the 450 quid the c3 costs, I'd buy it.

Pillion or not, its your face thats the priority.
Go for a nice Shark lid....plenty of bleddy cool designs that are somewhat less butch than most, and pretty reasonably priced.
