Average Speed Cameras - Cat N Fiddle

Hopefully not a duplicate post this one, but heard on local news that the installation of average speed cameras has been approved for the Cat N Fiddle.

Aye, well tbh it would have been daft to speed there these days anyway. Just means we will have to go on the (even better imo) roads around it :D

If they are daft enough to locate them in the wrong place, just take a breather at the top for a few mins ;)

Just ride roads that arnt over advertised, over policed and full of tourist bikers going slow.

Problem solved.

I plan to ride the peaks as little as possible this year it's practically covered in 50's and to many cars/villages.

That's bad news :(.

Re: Average Speed Cameras - Cat N Fiddle

Bit of an obvious ststement this but the majority of average speed camera systems are forward facing, ie: they read front number plates. I'm guessing that given how popular this road is with bikes they're planning on making them rear shots, but it would be interesting to see just how reliable they turn out to be. ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) systems, which is basically what average speed cameras are, are notoriously unreliable reading rear number plates, especially bike ones.

Camera's being fitted this week and according to BBC news there are 7 of them. Shouldn't average camera's come in pairs though?

If they do fit rear facing ones just ride along the road the other way...

Not necessarily, there just needs to be at least two. When first introduced they did work in pairs, which was why the dodge about changing lanes came about, nowadays they are much smarter. The system uses ANPR to read a number plate at one point, and then at another. The computer knows the distance between all the cameras on the system so it simply works out the time between the two reads. That's why you now have cameras on entrances/exits to services and slip roads, stops people blatting along and then pulling off for a coffee!

Arseburgers. Doctor my number plate with insulting tape? Or just go somewhere else. Shame, I like the peaks.

Follow the a54 from Buxton, through congleton, and into north Wales instead

Doctor your plate and you will be going somewhere else, and you won't be needing the bike....

Just watch the A54, cos as a section of that is being covered with cameras too during this installation.

G 16-02-10 07:41 PM

Re: Average Speed Cameras - Cat N Fiddle

The only section of the A54 getting the cameras is the section from buxton, upto where the A54 goes off to the left, then the cameras carry on down to the C&F pub.

The main section of the wont be getting any cameras, probably will be getting more traffic now unfortunately, and its debatably more technically challenging and longer that the C&F itself.

From what I have seen the sections getting cameras are

The A54 from section A to B and the A537 from B to C

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...,0.078964&z=13

The A54 really starts from A to C here...(Watching out for the awsome completely airborn jump at B)

Is it that bad really! In that case, since I stand to come off worst in any soap-dropping incident, I shall follow the advice given and try my luck with Herr Brünström's militia. Congleton-Buxton's lush, nice pub with a decent camping field about halfway.

Some good old rants in there aren't there! Some good points to mind, I wonder if there will be a separate operation in the summer to stop and check all the bikes number plates just to make sure the cameras can read them properly...or perhaps to move on the traffic jam in front of each camera!

Meh, dunno what the fuss is all about. You can only go at low speed round there anyway....its always too damn foggy!

Apparently you do this speed 130mph on this road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mange about 40mph but then I could be a wimp at riding!!!!!!

Letas all go on a day out and do the average speed just to p*** the boy racers off lmao

To be fair you can easily average way over 50mph from the pub to Macclesfield, you can easily get to 130 on stretchs of it on an ss600.

Not that I would ever condone doing so...

Re: Average Speed Cameras - Cat N Fiddle

Well, just go north a bit and do Buttertubs pass instead. Just don't extract the urine, because there is no good way to leave the road up there. Amazing though.

Re: Average Speed Cameras - Cat N Fiddle

I've never really blasted along the straighter bits. I just don't see the point, but I do like a spirited bimble through the bends on a regular basis. Can it be safer constantly looking at your clocks than the road and conditions ? Most of the accidents on there are 50mph or below in the slower corners that catch people out ( like Davey's low speed off in his vid ), but this will lower the rate because people just won't go. It's a shame because I've been riding The Cat for nearly 30 years and love to go over it and Long Hill, then back again, most Monday's in the better months because it's nice and quiet. :(

Fond memories. Ratty
