Pointy bottom end into a curvy?
 

In particular could I transplant heads, barrels, clutch etc from my 99 onto this 04 bottom end.
I've got a damaged crankcase that's leaking badly. A straight engine swap would be better but I've bought another bike so cash is short and engines are more pricey than I'd hoped.

No reason why you couldn't, especially if you have the old engine for bits and pieces.

You'd need to sort the oil cooler though, not sure where/how you'd to that on a curvy as IIRC the front header pipe gets in the way of the pointy one.

You can plug the oil cooler holes. Maybe use those same bolts from curvy.

I don't see why it wouldn't work, you will need to use curvy rotor and stator.

The pointy cases are drilled for the cooler (blank on the curvy), I'm not sure if you can plug them, you could just put in a small loop though.

What cases am i thinking of where engine not having cooler just uses short normal bolts instead of banjos...

Other than losing oil at an alaming rate my current engine runs fine, I was using it daily up until a couple of weeks ago, so I should have all the parts I'll need.
I'd rather avoid the expense, especially if it's not strictly necessary, of having to buy an oil cooler but from what I've read here and after a quick Google it seems it can be plugged or by passed. I've seen oil cooler bypass kits for other models so that might be the way to go but it'll probably be a while before I'm at that stage.
In the mean time is it a good idea to dismantle what I can with the engine still in the frame?

It's easier to use the chassis to help get some of the nuts off.

Does this mean you have a curvy bottom end going spare?

I thought it might be.

Eventually.
It's done 45,000 miles and the righthand crankcase is goosed, no odd noises though. I didn't think I'd be up to a total rebuild using a good case but that would be doable.

Tried that, then tried it again and then a few more times but could never quite get it.
Case is damaged where the oil pressure switch is fitted so any repair would only have been temporary anyway.

How much damage - helicoil wouldn't fix it would it?

Threads are stripped and the boss is cracked. You'd need to get the case welded, if that's possible, then fit a helicoil. That's if you can even get the now epoxy welded pressure switch back out. Still need to split the cases to do that anyway.

@45000, used all year and kept out on the street mostly uncovered it's still a perfectly good motorcycle so I don't want to break it. Newish bottom end and hopefully it'll be good for another 45000

Just put short bolts with crush washer and you done.
All parts are interchangeable between two except transmission clutch shaft.
Like Yorkie said, need to use stator/rotor from curvy on that 04 bottom.

what is different in shaft? Can you use old clutch on new shaft?

New one is longer, inside motor. You can use all parts and move them around, you just can't take whole shaft and put in other cases. 99-03 is same, changed in 04. Same with cases, 03 are specific for that year only.
