Where can I get a phone sim from
Ok, I want no monthly charges, I just want to be able to credit the number and that credit lasts until spent. I just need to be able to send a text hopefully never.
A search so far has only come up with Asda who will charge 4p/text but you need to send one at least every 9 months. The reason for it is I was looking at GPS trackers, you send them a text, and they text you back. Ideal for hiding somewhere on your bike. the idea being put £10 credit on it. OK if the bike goes walkies I may have to put another credit on it , if it is "mobile" or I want to realtime track using GPRS, Otherwise, I should have its position for the cost of a couple of texts. |
Re: Where can I get a phone sim from
Think the main companies do an offer along the lines of buy a sim for a tenner, get 10 quid credit. I actually got a free one with my last contract renewal, which I thought was a little pointless.

Re: Where can I get a phone sim from
I'd be more inclined to be getting a sim with the major carriers, the things only as good as the mobile coverage. Voda is 10p per text on payg, and I'd be testing it every month anyway so no worries about the minimum useage.
How much do those trackers finally sell for? |
Re: Where can I get a phone sim from

Re: Where can I get a phone sim from
I saw sim cards on Tesco checkouts for 99p last night.
IIRC if you put 15 quid on it, they triple it to 45! |

Re: Where can I get a phone sim from
3 sims are free and they give free 3 to 3 texts after you've loaded a bit of credit.
they also allow £5 topups but you can only get those form a 3 store i belive. |
Re: Where can I get a phone sim from
I use t mobile in my gps tracker. Its 4 p per text to tmobile phones and there are free texts the next weekend when you top up 10 quid. I think its also free texts the following month. Whilst I was waiting for my free sim to arrive I used my phone sim and free text service like 02 to config the tracker.
GPS tracker worked well on the sussex rideout the other weekend. I set it on auto track with sms every 5 mins. Must have pleased tmobile but they did offer free texts over the weekend. Battery life lasts about 2 days and I aim to hard wire it in with a motrax battery guard unit. |
Re: Where can I get a phone sim from
I have check out all the major companies, they all seem to want a monthly top up.

Vodafone - Free PAYG Sim
Terms (PAYG Airtime) Terms (Simply Price Plan) The important bits, taken from 'Terms (PAYG Airtime)' linked above: "6 Suspension, disconnection and ending the agreement 6a We can suspend (in other words bar), restrict or stop providing the services (all or part of them) in the following circumstances. ... 3 You choose not to use the service for 180 days. Using this service means making any chargeable outbound calls (but not calls to 191, see your price plan for charges) or topping up your account. ... 6b If we suspend the mobile phone because you have chosen not to use the services (as defined in 6a3 above) for 180 days, we will, if you ask within 90 days of the suspension, reconnect the services and make available any previous credit held on your account at the time of the suspension. If you have not kept to this agreement or not used the services for 270 days, and we disconnect your mobile equipment, you will lose any credit held on your account." |

So my reading of this is that if I used vodaphone I would have to buy a top up every month, even if I had not made a single text on the credit |
Re: Where can I get a phone sim from
Nope, they are addons. Those terms shall only apply if you were to purchase a voice or text pack. An example of one of these would be the Vodafone Text Pack whereby you pay £5 (upfront) and then you get 70 text messages to use within a 30 day period (as defined in your quote of the terms).
So simply do not purchase a voice or text pack, and it'll use your credit as normal. So as long as you can make a chargeable call once every 180 days you're good to go. |
Re: Where can I get a phone sim from
ask at your local petrol station they chuck em in for nothing at the shelf (or what ever texico) is now called garage not too far from me. One of the football lad gets them quite often cos they come with free £10credit on them and he is simply just that cheap.
