what will u do to winterise your bikes?

What steps do you recommend to keep the salt at bay over winter?

Re: what will u do to winterise your bikes

fill tank with fuel, give a good clean, disconnect battery, put a layer of hard wax over the easily reached bits and spray the rest with some silicon type spray(yet to buy this so cant say what type) put in shed and cover up, get it out again late feb/early march. if i had paddock stands i would also put it on these but i dont so ill rotate the wheels every week.

You wouldn't need to keep salt at bay if it were laid up in your garage, so I assume you'll be riding it over winter? Search for ACF50 and FS365 and have a read of the many many threads that existing on the subject.

Add ACF50... change summer track cooling water for antifreeze mix instead. Service brakes.

That's it really

*checks calendar......nope year still has 12 months in it not 9*

Oil your locks, as said ACF50 (my S4 had that in March and it's still working well, expensive, but no doubting it works) if it gets really grotty wash it down with cold water (it'll leave the ACF50 there), make sure your chain/brakes and clutch are in good nick and all adjusted correctly, adapt your riding to the conditions and dress up warm, about it really.

Cheers Mark.

Crash bike, leave in dealers warm workshop over Christmas. Well, that has worked well so far for me this year.

mine only had 8months in it this year  winter for me will involve taking the bike to bits, renewing worn parts and putting it back together, dont like to work too hard at the weekends lol.

I used to take the pi££ out of fair weather riders......

Well I need to remember the next time I buy a bike for the winter, 3 months early I need to run it every now and again, to keep the carbs from gunking up.

I'll be putting mine on the optimate and leaving it where it is... My bike is a toy for fun, theres no enjoyment in freezing my **** off in **** weather and getting the bike covered in crap.

Nothing. A good layer of crap protects the finish.

Not any more, it got destroyed last winter when I washed the bloody thing leaving it open to corrosion.

-Ralph- 29-11-10 05:53 PM

Re: what will u do to winterise your bikes

I think you've misdiagnosed that Lozzo, it's not washing it and leaving it open to corrosion that's the problem, it's just 'cos you washed it and it got wet!

Well my 16 year old ZZR still looks respectable, despite winter use. OK so all the steel bits have been replaced, but other than down pipoes and fasteners the Kwaks ain't any worse than say...ooooh...Suzuki?

back on topic - ACF50 before the salt goes down and then leave it. Occasionally rinse with cold water, paying attention to the brakes in particular. I always service my brakes every 4k anyway, so I've not suffered from sticky calipers (although granted the brakes are off a fireblade now for extra stopping power)

I also mix some ACF-50 in the scottoiler reservoir.
