Got my lowers painted not happy

The finish is fine. Its the colour match is way out, its grand candy blue. Should I bring the bike and the lowers back for a better match? He painted them without seeing the bike, was that a bad idea? I'm gutted they dont match :(

Bibio 12-01-11 07:37 PM

Re: Got my lowers painted not happy

yes that was a bad idea. you should have taken him a sample.

Ok lesson learned , he will be getting the bike too this time

Re: Got my lowers painted not happy

Would I be better off to get the paint from a bike paint supplier and give it to my spray painter? I want a really good match.

for these guys its there bread and butter ,give him the bike and let them do there job
sometimes cutting corners costs more, like you not taking into account sun fade (most likely reason for paint not matching). drop it off ,agree a price ,agree a return date ,pay deposit , check hes done a good job ,pay the man

Re: Got my lowers painted not happy

Sun fade is the most likely for non colour match. My seat cowl on the yellow SV is a lot darker than it should be, but then its been in a box for a long time...so I leave it out in the sun in summer, and gradually it has faded to less noticeable. Also one to point out is if you wash it a lot, or t cut it, then that attacks a layer at a time too.

Thats the thing the new paint is much lighter in colour. He said his system for mixing has a note on it thats its only an approx match. But he has told me to bring over the bike and he will add black or blue to the mix until he gets it right. Does this sound ok?

Ok mate thanks for your advise. I'll give him another go and hopefully it will work out.

Re: Got my lowers painted not happy

Bit of an update. I went to see my painter with my lowers and bike this time. He seen they are not a match. He does not think he can match them, and is telling me to respray the rest of the bike too! I dont like this new blue on the lowers,so he said to pick any colour i like. But I like my old blue :(

Re: Got my lowers painted not happy

If he's going to paint your whole bike for free (probably not) I would let him do it.

Re: Got my lowers painted not happy

Grand candy blue is a pain to properly colour match, Firstly he needs to lay a silver base on which to spray the blue, then lacquer, but he need to also tint the colour to match the ageing of your bike. As you can guess it is an approximation as you never know the end colour until the lacquer has been applied, dried/polish.

Normally on a car, you end up painting adjacent panels when painting just to get by the problem of approximating a match. I guess he knows he cannot get it perfect, hence his suggestion of a total respray.

Ricerocket 19-01-11 11:47 AM

Re: Got my lowers painted not happy

It would not be free but very cheap as I would strip the bike and prepare the panels myself. What would you do people? To respray or not?

Drew Carey 19-01-11 11:59 AM

Re: Got my lowers painted not happy

If it was me and he was doing it cheap, I would go the total respray root. Having owned the Napoleon Blue (also difficult to match), he will struggle to ever get any of these pearlescent paiint jobs perfect. Now is the time to think about what colour you would love etc.

PS - what Bike you got out of interest? If a K4 onwards, if it was me I would go for black all over, would then service the forks, strip them and get them powdercoated black. Then go for clear indicator lenses.......

Blanck on Black on pointy's with Black swingarms are lurrrrrrvely. IMHO.

That is totally the wrong colour, no way is it grand candy blue. is it the jade blue?

Drew Carey 19-01-11 12:19 PM

Re: Got my lowers painted not happy

Nope that looks like the K6 plus Grand Napoleon Candy Blue as I think it is called. Almost a pefect match to my old bike. From that phot at least.

Based on the fact you have a curvy, I think you have the best colour already, but gettinig it to match is clearly not going to happen.

Yeah I think you are right Tim. Perhaps he got the wrong paint code for the curvy blue and mixed up to the wrong spec. There were two blues for curvy.

Drew might be right, but it is even more of a cockup if he mixed up a blue for the wrong model bike!

Yes I do like my old blue. I really dont want to go changing it !

Drew Carey 19-01-11 12:41 PM

Re: Got my lowers painted not happy

I would say he has therefore got hold of the wrong paint. What I would do is get him to get as close as possible to your paint code, then do all panels in that colour.

Come to some form of agreement whereby it is carried out either dirt cheap or at no extra cost.

Either way, if you provide a colour code they are obliged to get as close as possible to it. That is NOT as close as possible to it by a long shot.

He has one of them computer aided mixing set ups. I dont know how it works but do you think it could have mixed up the paint codes?

Got to agree with Drew again.

I got closer to that using mixed rattle cans from halfrauds.

I also got near perfect using cans provided by Paints4u.com

They provided the primer, silver under coat, blue paint and lacquer.

If that's the case, just think how many times you have clicked the wrong option from a drop down menu... I would think he selected the wrong blue...

Ok just off the phone. My painter thinks the system ( not him ) might have mixed up the colours. Whats the code for the colour you guys think my lowers are painted now? He thinks maybe the system has the paint mix listed under the wrong code, if that makes sense to anyone.

Bloody hell, that really is a difference. I would tell him to either repaint the lowers to match or failing that, to spray the whole of the bike for free. Either that or get your money back.

He will respray just the lowers if I like, if we can figure out what happened and get the right colour. Ya they are way out I nearly cried when I put them up against the bike.

right walk into halfauds hand ask to write down the mixture settings for yc2 from there paint match system, yes they are robbing gits but also genrally helpful and it takes them 3 seconds to do, newly armed with this go to you painter and say "here is the correct mixing ratio and it has to be done on a sonic silver base coat
thanks i'll be back in a few days to compare and hopefully we will be right".

Ok guys I have had a another chat with my painter. He knows I'm a picky fecker, so he said I will not be happy with the finish of painting just the lowers. So we have come to an agreement to respray the lot! How do ye feel about blue pearl? Something like the link? http://www.specialistpaints.com/imag...Blue_Pearl.jpg
