run - around car wanted in your area??!!....

My sister is in a bit of a pickle and as her people carrier just failed its MOT due to rust underside, she needs a replacement car ASAP.

Anyone know of a cheap runaround for a couple of hundred quid perhaps a pug or something similar in the Totness, exeter area is where she is based?

Her old people carrier was a nissan serena obviously for the money she isnt going to be able to replace it with something that big, so something just to run her back and forward to work would be great.

If your interested in taking the people carrier of her hands also give me a shout, it would be for someone interested in taking on a big welding job though the garage has quoted £1000 to get it to MOT standards [-X 147974 miles on the clock.

Any suggestions would be welcome at this point, even if it is something you have seen on ebay.

I'm afraid I'm going to be no help. As usual. However...

Things never seem to happen quite when you want them too. I am soon to 'upgrade' my Pug 106 but unfortunately probably not until the end of February. The Pug just passed MOT on Saturday so she would have had a years motoring without worrying about the MOT.

For a couple of hundred pounds it is going to be very hit and miss if she gets one that is going to be a runner and stay on the road.

Aint that the truth. Sadly she doesnt have much of a choice, she had put that money aside to get it through the MOT then the garage drop the bombshell of a bit more then she thought.

I know she isnt going to get something trustworthy for that money, but she hasnt a lot of other choices right now as she needs to get back and forwards to work.

She was talking about buying on HP anyone got any thoughts on that?? My instant reaction was not to go there but I know a lot of people do.

Needs must, but if she can avoid it, that would be the best bet.

Does she have anyone with mechanical experience? If a car came along that had MOT but needed work, they could help her out getting the work done to make it safe on the road.
I found the Pug on eBay from a private seller. 12 months MOT (which is the most important thing when buying a banger) and then had to fix allsorts for it to be road worthy. The exhaust broke in half on my way to work once. The right shock was shot and the headlights were loose. It cost me a couple of hundred quid to get it road worthy again, but just flew through the MOT this time round. So it is possible to get bargains. I was lucky. However, I paid more I think than your friend has to spend. Like I said, for that sort of money she is going to be very lucky to get something worth having.

I would suggest the HP or personal loan route, she needs figure out what monthly repayments she can afford before she even sets a budget or looks at a car, then work from there.

2 grand over 3 years will work out about £70 a month or £16 a week.

If you decided she could look at the HP route, look at something like this. It has obviously been owned by someone with the money to have a second car sitting in the garage for very occasional use, or possibly somebody who is retired. It looks new. The fact it's fitted with a door edge protector, tells you something about the person who has owned it.

Would not getting a personal loan in cash from the bank be a cheaper way than organising HP for a specific car?

Within 40 miles of Totnes and under £500. 27 cars

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/u...c/price-to/500

Within 40 miles of Totnes and between £500 - £1000. 244 cars

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/u.../sort/priceasc

Some examples of the under £500

1997 Fiat Punto with 94k on clock £289
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...95nh?logcode=p

1995 Toyota Corolla with 109k on the clock £450

1996 Toyota Corolla with 43k on the clock £495
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...95nh?logcode=p

You would have to be unlucky to get a crap Corolla. Nice gearboxes on them, the second one only had 43k on it.

But if buying a cheap old banger I'd at the very least drop the oil and filter asap, or better still a full service with other filters and plug change. I don't know about down there but I hear adverts on the radio around here saying they'll service a car (under 2.0l) for under £100.

Yup, those Corollas were made when Toyota's track record was still one of absolute reliability. Things seem to be a bit different now...

and if buying a car over the standard cambelt service, get it changed. Especially if there is no proper evidence of this having been done.

The Pug I bought I was told the cambelt had just been changed. On looking inside, one found a belt that was within a hundred miles (if that) of snapping. I changed it myself with the help of my dad. :) I think it was the original cambelt and the mileage on the clock was 125k.
