My little SV based project

I've been at it for a while now, but its at a stage where it looks like a proper bike and it was wheeled out of the workshop for a few photos earlier today.

So the general idea is take a SV650 as a donor bike, use the great little engine and some of its components, and re-style it into a much more compact, desirable sports bike. Along the way, make some improvements to the performance and handling to make the bike as complete and enjoyable to ride as possible.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_r5ON6ltg7M...all-040210.jpg

First stage, get some ideas down on paper. Quite a lot of sketches later and there was a clear direction to take the design forward.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_r5ON6ltg7M...ign+040210.jpg

With the sketch stage in process, it was time to get hold of an SV and take some of the critical dimensions. From this, a mock-up of the chassis design could be worked on using CAD. Note the design of a rear swingarm at this stage, something that has since been dropped.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_r5ON6ltg7M...0/IMG_0116.JPG

With the chassis designed, a mock-up needed to be made to fit the engine.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_r5ON6ltg7M...0/IMG_0025.jpg

The next stage was to build up the rolling chassis with the new frame and subframe, ready to prepare the bike for clay modeling.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_r5ON6ltg7M...0/IMG_1128.JPG

Some months later, the bike finally emerges from the workshop for a few photos.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_r5ON6ltg7M...0/IMG_1129.JPG

With the clay modeling process finished, the majority of the design work is complete and its time to start taking some fibreglass molds to make the bodywork.

Its still a long way from completion, but its now possible to get a good idea of what the finished bike will look like.

Theres a lot more detail about the project to date and other stuff Im working on, on my blog http://moto-rdesign.blogspot.com

Absolute respect, well done.
Looking forward to seeing more work :D
I could never do clay modeling, always ended up with a ball that looked nothing like I wanted to.
BTW what software you using? I'm wanting to do some design work mesen. Cheers

Amazing...btw - when you've done the moulds and laid the fairings up, bang me out a set and sort out some fixings for the stock pointy frame...ta ;)

Re: My little SV based project

why did you go with the curvy style frame and not the pointy(obviously you have taste etc)

Keep this you to date mate looks like a epic build.
You doing anything fancy with the exhaust?

Re: My little SV based project

Cool.

IMO do yourself a favour now and ditch the stock front end and rear shock, forget about the standard geometry. When you get them handling sweet the numbers are pretty much a GSXR 600. Otherwise you will need to do that later and you wouldn't want to run into any clearance issues when making it handle as well as it looks.

Are you doing the lot yourself? What CAD package? Is this what you do or is it a hobby?

Thats mint, must have quite a lot of patience for playing around with clay in such detail.

I use a couple of programs for my CAD work. Alias Studiotools for "styling" the bodywork and Solidworks for the engineered components. The mix works quite well, though they are totally different packages.

Simply because I could pick up a broken curvy for less then a broken pointy. At the start of the project, it was more a case of get a bike with all the parts, with the priority being the engine to start taking dimension off.

You doing anything fancy with the exhaust?
No, the exhaust will be kept where it is. I did think early on to place it under the seat, but this makes a few things more complicated, such as a more complex subframe, heatshield around the bodywork/seat etc.

I will be getting some sportsbike suspension and brakes to put on it, just not at that stage yet. As for the geometry, I think I may look into that. How far off the GSXR 600 geometry is the SV and is there a particular year/version which is favoured?

Im doing all the work myself, rather foolishly. I may have someone come in to TIG my frame and fuel tank though. Yeh, this is what I do, but this is more of a personal project. Still in the early stages of setting up the business.

And yes, I will do my best to keep everyone up to date. I think things should start to happen a lot quicker from now on and I regularly update my blog too.

Re: My little SV based project

Where are you based, any have you got any jobs going?

Normally shock is lengthened out to around 355mm (from 337), forks 20mm shorter approx but with less offset in triples. More rake obviously but trail not changed that drastically.

I believe it comes to very similar numbers to a K4 series GSXR but would have to check that. Rides very similar anyway, nice and planted rear, not squatting and running wide or chirping and sliding.

The stock rear link on curvy is pretty much linear for all travel that gets used.

thats going to look rather nice when finished.

Re: My little SV based project

With the GSXR front end it pulls the front down, it make it a much more planted bike and more focused

That looks like it is going to be stunning, i agree with the underseat exhaust idea. Do you have any ideas of what you have planned for the engine?

Very impressed with the design stage, you must have an art based background looking at the sketches, computer work and clay.

Please keep us updated, i can't wait to see the finished product.

Looking at the CAD design there was a matching swing arm too, it would be nice that's for sure even if it was double sided

Only thing that worries me is airflow for the radiator, but I'm no professional on things like that.

Other than that its a sweet little thing. I'm sure there are people on here that would love fairings like that on their SV...

For sure...shame the frame is bespoke and not the curvy original otherwise the fairing fabricated for this bike could be remade and sold on...unless of course the bespoke frame has the same dimensions and mounting points etc

I reckon it's the very attractive love child of a Daytona 675 and a Ducati 1098. Incredible attention to detail in this project, I reckon there would be a market for a kit of parts for people to make their own (like kit cars).

Re: My little SV based project

That looks beautiful. I agree it is also crying out for an underseat exhaust.

Oh and do hire YorkieChris. He is good with the spanners.

Ha, I'd love to have employees to help move things along faster, but they would have to pay themselves right now!

Got a bit of an update, as I have started to mold some panels.

Theres a new post on my blog at http://moto-rdesign.blogspot.com/

Im not really planning on doing much to that at all. May well have a modified/different airbox with air inlets from the nose of the bike but thats maybe it. More a case of re-packaging to centralise the mass and reduce the overall weight of the bike.

Drumming_Animal 14-02-11 09:59 PM

Re: My little SV based project

Looking good so far, although i reckon it does need a different swingarm most definatly.

Underseat exhaust would be good but its done now and it would just look too much like a ducati 1098/daytona 675 if it was to have one.
What would be cool though would be to have a combo of both underseat and side slung exhaust, a bit of inspiration from the gp bikes...
Something different would be cool with the exhuast, underseat is awesome, but maybe not for this one, but something unique is definatly needed

Hello All,

Sorry for no update images of late, but its just been some sanding so not much to see.

Heres a sneak peak of what the bikes looking like at the moment. Having a mad push at the moment to get it ready for the BMF show this weekend, so if you are going, come and check it out on the Angelic Bulldog Streamliner stand!
