Want to get your downpipes clean - EASIEST WAY

Ok folks, dont post here as often as I used to, but I had to tell you about this.

I know SV owners often like to keep their downpipes polished and will spend hours of elbow grease rubbing and polishing until they can see their face.

Well I have now found the solution which I can honestly say is possibly the best cleaning product I have ever seen.

I am in no way affiliated with it, but Optiglanz (available on net and Hein Gericke) is the dogs danglies for cleaning exhausts. I tried it on the Triumph and stuff that I was trying to clean for hours literally ran off in seconds. Its about £13 a bottle but the fact that such a small amount is required (spray bottle) it lasts a long time! I urge anyone to give it a go and post the results on here

Do you have to remove the pipes to do this? wont it eat in to say the engine casing?

Seems to me to be a bit like alibright which we used to paint on and wash off. It brought aluminium up like brand new.
If you were worried about overspray going on the engine paint it on with a brush.

BUT it brings all of the chromium in stainless to the surface and your pipes will discolour even quicker afterwards.
What about this?

That's the bit that caught my eye too. Along with the fact that it eats alloy. I suspect the only way to use the stuff safely would be to remove the pipes and if you're going to go to all that trouble then you may as well just get stuck in and clean the pipes in normal fashion.

I would like to know more about a solvent that is capable of moving crystals within a ferrous alloy.

Reading the bottle it says that it is ok for painted engine casings. Its literally a wipe on wipe off job, you could even spray it on the cloth and then wipe the pipe over with it. I used someone elses bottle so need to get my own (which I will this weekend) but I was amazed at the ability to clean it.

Simples, the chromium in stainless steel is mixed with iron, nickel, carbon etc at very high temperatures at which point the atoms all fuse together in a metallic bond. When it cools, this metal solidifies, it is not a liquid that permits just the chunks of chromium to move to the surface. What is going to fill the void left by the migrating chromium? when the magic solvent is applied to loosen the bonds falsely holding this magic material . Oh silly me, liquid metal. Of course Tim you plonker. Think Terminator 2, metal is liquid.

Oh Arny, just think, tankers of fuel, cryogenics, nothing works. you need some Hiene Gericke stainless steel cleaner. You would have thought man (scub that) machine from the future would have known how to kill chrome.

I have a high IQ according to tests that ignore a lack of common sense and any other intelligence base, but I don't know wtf Tim Wilky is going on about. Engineers are mad as hatters in any case.
I've bought the gear, going to use it, shine it up and if it kills me downpipe in the long run, I'll going to buy another one. Simple.

That is someone talking about pickling paste which is quite a strong acid in gel form used for cleaning up stainless after welding. Just because this person suggests the results are similar, doesn't mean it's the same stuff.

Translation for you; the guy talking about Chromium is talking ********.

If your down pipe is polished to a high shine, then you notice the discolouration through use more readily as shiny to dull is v. obvious. Dull to a little duller, or slightly changing in colour is less noticable.

Like all the shiny down pipe gang understand, to keep it looking good, you need to keep on top of it.

I've ordered some. Will report back.

I'll fire it on to some spare bits of aluminium and chromed steel and see what happens. :)

I ordered some last night, I think the Tuono's down pipes are stainless steel? [-o< :smt104

It says it's safe on rubber and paint, don't think i'll trust that though and I think my swing arm is alloy? and the pipe goes through the swing arm, hhhmmmm think i'll be taking off the downpipes, yey

yes they are..

agreed with tim..

the Minerals within metal are fused during smelting and manufacturing process, if this **** managed to change the fundamental build up of a metal just by spraying it on its either molten lava or it just plain shouldn't be in a plastic container.

I imagine its no different from ovenbrite.

Well, I bought some yesterday and used it today. My pipe has 20k worth of all year riding cack on it and, with a little help from a wire brush too, it's all gone now. Just need to get some autosol if i want it uber shiny.
+1 for the stuff.

I have used wonder wheels alloy wheel cleaner for the same job. It cost £8 for 5 litres from costco. It cleaned it up quite quickly and you have to apply it with a brush so you don't need to worry about spray getting on the swingarm etc.

my mates SS fabrication facility has just invested in a sonic weld cleaner. my god its one nifty piece of kit. guess who will have a shiny shiny downpipe from now on with no polishing involved :-)

dip carbon brush in solution, paint the SS and watch the sparks then spray on neutraliser and wipe clean.

Re: Want to get your downpipes clean - EASIEST WAY

1st of all...acid + metal all your going to get is some surface oxidation so it looks shiny as a shiny thing but will dull back down by just being in air and moisture after a while.
and i need to get me some.

Re: Want to get your downpipes clean - EASIEST WAY

Received today and tried 2 mins ago and well it worked lovely on the lightly tarnished area but the heavily trnished it did nothing it did it twice and nothing.

rob13 19-04-11 08:56 PM

Re: Want to get your downpipes clean - EASIEST WAY

I think it needs a while to work on the tarnished stuff. I did mine this evening in a bit of rush due to failing light. Managed to get all the yellow tarnishing off the exhaust so it looks brand new in that area however up in the eves near to the engine the dark stuff is taking a little bit more shifting (it is working though). Might have to have another go on the top of it next time I clean the bike.

I'm happy with the way in which its cleaned up the stuff I can see though. I found using a non-stick pan scourer made it easier to shift also.

The instructions say to leave on for a "MAXIMUM" of 3, that's THREE minutes....

Re: Want to get your downpipes clean - EASIEST WAY

If theyre totally black or brown, then they might take a couple of goes to shift. If not, then they should come up very clean. I can see my face in mine.

How does the wonder wheels compare to this stuff?
I've got some WW at home for the car, but never thought of using it on the exhaust!

Here we go then. Not perfect restoration but much much better, and it only took 10 minutes from start to finish. Cheers Rob.
