Is it illegal?

Is it illegal to have shotgun cartridges if you don't have a fire arms license? Just found 6 in my kitchen cupboard?!

i take it you have just moved into a new house?

Re: Is it illegal?

Reeder, personally I wouldn't post that on a public forum.

I don't think it's legal to have live ammo, hence mine is hidden ;)

Reeder 05-05-11 09:12 PM

Re: Is it illegal?

Nope, not a new house and the kitchen was only redone a couple of months ago...

I don't care about posting it on here :D might pop them into the bobby station tomorrow if there's no excuse why we have them?

Re: Is it illegal?

Not illegal to own cartridges you only need a shotgun licence to buy them not to own them unless law has changed fairly recently.

I didn't know that tbh, not sure I'd like to find out though.

I'm guessing it'd be illegal to try and make some contraption to try and fire these?

Google is your friend (although not always 100% reliable when it comes to the law). It says:

It's not illegal to posess them as they are inert when not in the weapon.
It is illegal to buy or sell unless both parties have valid licenses
It is illegal to make a gift of them to anyone under 15
It is illegal to dispose of the cartriges by burning or by any method other than intended.

Just some random facts for you.

Exactly they are useless unless you have a gun to fire them therefore not illegal to own. If you do set one off outside the confines of a shotgun barrel they are relatively harmless so do not require a licence to posses fact.

Relative to what?
I would have thought they'd still be pretty bloomin dangerous. Just picking them up gives me the heebyjeebies:pale:

Relative to a brass cased round, a firework, or a gallon of petrol, or a fork. No idea why you would get heebyjeebies? Weapons and ammunition are just tools, lots of stuff just as, or more dangerous.

Type of powder used in a shotgun cartridge, at that grain size etc will only burn violently when confined, the cartridge isn't sufficient confinement to get a bang. Probably.

Making any sort of device to fire them is very illegal, and very dangerous, confinement makes for high pressures which can cause explosions. PM me if you want to know how :smt082*

*I am joking.

Just FYI that does not apply to any other sort of ammunition, any brass cased round whether it's rimfire or centrefire is section 1 ammunition and can't be in possession of general public without a licence and even then only a number allowed on your ticket.

Due to some idiots who they never catch the penalties for firearms offences are really serious these days for anyone who isn't likely to do anyone any harm. Of course if you're into rap music and mowing down innocent bystanders with machine pistols you can crack on, you'll probably get an ASBO. The 5 year sentences are reserved for those hardened post office robbing types who have air rifles making 12,1 ft lbs energy :-P
(cynical, me?)

What a ill (bordering on the stupid)advising post-harmless you say -aye right-i've got a mate who had a brain fart a few years ago and decided to get a hammer and a nail together with a shotgun cartridge-end result was fingers in tatters and years of reconstructive surgery with permanent nerve damage-and you say you've been a shooter for years i would expect you to be more aware of the dangers.

Ok fair enough not harmless but anyone stupid enough to do something like that is just as likely to blow themselves up with an aerosol or something equally stupid.
btw I said relatively harmless not harmless

Re: Is it illegal?

You could make a pipe rifle (aka a zip gun) or something but you SHOULD NOT DO THIS AS IT IS ILLEGAL and you'd get done for having a gun.

Or you could go out and get a proper shotgun licence and have a shotgun so when the zombies/terrorists/BNP come you can blast them.

difficult to qualify really,

the law states you need a license to Buy the ammunition and it should be stored in a safe place.

Logic therefore dictates you should really only hold the ammunition if you have a license to buy it.
If mr plod were to find out they would ask why you have them, what your need is for them etc etc without satisfactory answers you could find yourself with a firearms charge I believe.

It would be best to find someone with a shotgun certificate and hand them over, as they have a license to buy and subsequently own the cartridges.

and ffs do not put them in a vice, it will explode sideways. [-X

Reeder, just hand them in at your local Police Station and all will be well with the world.

Along with some rather large black bags tied up with duct tape?

My dad does drive a big mercedes with blacked out windows, everyone knows who he is, he is a 'business man' and he said he 'found them in his coat pocket'. All signs point to my dad being a gangster.

I'll hand them in at lunchtime because I'm a good boy :)
