Buying from gumtree...

Hola all...

I am currently looking to buy a set of golf clubs and have found a great set on gumtree.

Having never dealt with gumtree before im just after some info.

Obviously there is no binding contract like on ebay, so if i send payment and he doesnt send the item, then what? I would be paying through PayPal so im guessing I could go through them and get my payment back?

Thanks!

Stu

Gumtree, I would always go pick up in person and check out.

Its just a classified Ad after all.

I dont think paypal guarantees apply outside ebay - at least not on this kind of thing.

You are now covered outside ebay, just don't use paypal gift as this is not covered. If he insists on gift or bank transfer don't buy as there is a lot of scams on gumtree.

Hmmm -zuno's eh - good choice the 33 are a good club - shame I just can't play for toffee - but you got to get the perks sometime.
I'll admit never had prob's with Gumtree though I've always paid cash on collection

I'd definitely recommend going to see the item WITHOUT cash... if you're sure the guy hasn't got a pile of mates 'round the corner ready to mug you and the clubs are legit, then go and withdraw some cash and return to make the purchase. Suppose you could also take a scary looking friend or two of your own.

I’ve heard of people falling victim to a scam where someone will just upload photos of some bike or car from Google images to gumtree and make it look like an amazing deal (standard K2 GSXR600 with 18,000 miles with all service/mot history for £1800 for example). The scammer then gets an interested shopper to turn up at a certain address… if the buyer is alone, he gets beaten up and the £1800 he potentially has in his pocket gets nicked.

There’s probably less of a risk when viewing lower value items such as golf clubs, but it’s probably still worth considering.

I probably wouldn’t use any electronic money transfer when buying from free-ads personally.

Gumtree is just like a classified ad that you would have found in Loot/ Echange and Robbery etc. As people have siad. I would go pick them up and pay cash.

We have all got a bit cozy with Ebay. Its how things were done in the old days.
