Hello and help.
Firstly, hello to all on this board. I have just bought my first SV so expect many questions from myself asking for technical help on my bike!
My first issue is thus: Bought the bike a couple of weeks ago, got it through its MOT this weekend after having a new rear tyre fitted and so was looking forward to opening her up and seeing what the bike is really like. Well 0-60s good, not amazing but ok (i have previously had a Bandit 600 and a Diversion 600 so my comparisons are based on these) and I love the lazy engine tone (compared to a four). Perhaps the twins are a bit slower than there four cylinder counterparts? 60-80 is passable 80 up is quite poor and I think I would need a runway to finally see a ton! So my question is this: Why the slow performance? Is my bike restricted? If so how would I check or what else might be the issue? Thanks in advance for your thoughts. |
Re: Hello and help.
sounds like it maybe, unrestricted it should get to 100 easily, restricted would be around 70 easily.
what age is the bike? edit: hiya btw :) |
Re: Hello and help.
Sorry I should have mentioned, its a '99 model.
Is it easy to check if it has the restriction fitted? I'm assuming that the same method is always used when they are restricted? |
Re: Hello and help.
for the '99 yes :) it would be washers in the carbs to restrict flow of fuel and air, as to removing them... dunno, look for a online guide to fitting a restrictor kit, then follow till you get to the add the washers bit. if they are already there it's restricted :-P

Re: Hello and help.
just had a nosey around for you as i'm bored :-P
there are washers that go in between the carbs and ports on the engine, they would be there if at all :) |

Heya btw and welcome :) |
Re: Hello and help.
I have had a '99 600 divvy, that I rode both restricted and full power before i bought my sv, the SV should be quicker 0-60, like a noticable difference. The Divvy isnt really that quick for a 600 four, and I'm afraid I cant comment on the Blandit. So I would imagine your SV to be restricted, and the lack of top speed sounds very similar to when I had the restricted Divvy. Got to 80 nicely then took ages to reach a ton.

Re: Hello and help.
Hmm, well hopefully it is restricted at least then it will be an easy fix. I had a quick look around the site for info on derestricting but only found details on swapping out the official suzuki restrictor kit. Hopefully mine will be the other method as that looked quite involved and expensive! Would the washer kit be the 'F1' restrictor?

Re: Hello and help.
Should just be a case of removing the carbs, taking out the washers then re-assembling, took me all of half an hour on my divvy (also carbs), though i didnt have to remove the tank which you may need to on t SV to get to the carbs.

Re: Hello and help.
Silly question,
If its been restricted then it should not get to a ton... can you get past a ton ?. even slowly, then IMO it's not been restricted .. AND a big welcome........:smt041 |
Re: Hello and help.
My restricted divvy would do a ton, just took about a week to get to it

Re: Hello and help.
yes that's how mine is. not actually seen 100 but think it would make it with enough road. gonna have a look in the carbs I'm the morning see if there's some washers in there. will they be obvious if they are in? I'm assuming unrestricted there would be nothing there and not a washer with a bigger hole? I've been trying to find a photo of some so I know what I'm looking for but not had any look.

Re: Hello and help.
If it turns out to be not restricted it probably needs a service. On a curvy this should include lubing the choke plungers which can stick and cause a big loss of power and a big increase in fuel consumption.

Re: Hello and help.
Ah, cheers biggles. I was wondering what I was going to do if I open the carbs only to find they are standard. I should mention that the bike had been stood over a year prior to me getting it so perhaps that could be a big factor?

Re: Hello and help.
My 99 sv had sat for a while, although running wasnt as bad as yours, mine did need tlc. The chokes were both stuck and the carbs full of muck, one of the diaphrams also wasnt lifting on throttle. With a good strip n clean saw it right as rain. Give it a service too and balanced carbs.one thing to keep an eye for is the clutch plates being stuck together. This will cause gearchange probs and the bike trying to move when in gear and the lever pulled right in. This was happening on mine but taking the clutch out and soaking the plates sorted that.
Hope this helps and you get to the route of your problem soon |
Re: Hello and help.
what's the going rate for a pair of restrictor washers these days! checked carbs this morn and was cuffed to bits to discover the little buggers sat in there. took them out and took the bike for a quick test run and wow! the difference is like night and day. can't believe how much quicker the pick up is. cheers for all your advice.

For future reference the official Suzuki restriction method doesn't use any washers. You would need to check the carb pistons if there are no washers, the restricted one have holes in. |
