The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
Had this occur to me over a period of a month before i had the off and thought i would post my thoughts on this, maybe they see me as another power ranger type biker but i wear full leathers for safety reasons. The worst culprits i come across that don't do it are..
Classic bike riders that wear helmet/goggles Harley/chopper riders. A royal enfield rider who i pass coming on the opposite side from me on the way home. Don't get me wrong i do it myself, i refuse to wave/nod at bikers/scooters who wear jeans/shorts & other foolish clothing. |
Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
Mmmmm. When I was pootling around on my 125, I was rarely acknowledged even though I was wearing appropriate gear, Duchini synthetics (must have been the L plates). Since I have passed my test and become active on the SV (and looking like a power ranger in full race leathers) every other biker I have seen has tipped the head no matter what machine they were on. Seems like bikers in my area are a very sociable bunch, I always respond out of politeness.

I've got this big chip on my shoulder with people on two wheels with engines that don't wear protection. I dunno its just me. Maybe other bikers have a thing about my power ranger get up.

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
I nod when I can be bothered. I always respond though if someone else nods first, albeit a bit late sometimes.
Rarely nod or interact with scooters. Not so much due to "social hierarchy" but most round here are probably illegal and not interested anyway. |
Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
Also noticed down here Boone EVER waves.
Other way round in Scotland! |

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
Always a nod to all bikes even if its not reciprocated, except for scooters because like hongman says they're not interested/illiegal chavs.

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
I always nod if im not too busy with keeping an eye on traffic etc. I nod to scooters as long as they have decent gear on. If they're just wearing tshirt and jeans I dont bother. I used to wear gloves, jacket and boots when i had my scooter, used to always get people asking "why you wearing boots on a scooter?"

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
I do it too everyone. A big obvious sideways sweeping/ front nod. Regardless of what their riding and what their wearing... I do get ignored a lot though:smt072 Every biker has to start somewhere. I had L plates, I'm sure a lot of us did. I ride in jeans sometimes. It's only been recently I've gotten some properly decent gear. Just couldn't afford to.
I don't nod to the kids on 50 cc mopeds wearing t-shirts and flip flops while texting on the duel carriage way. Why do a group of them come up on you and all start revving their engines at the lights. It does make me chuckle. Their not bikers, their just after a quick way to get to the local really cool hang out being Halfords or the Asda car park and be cool with the rest of the really cool guys in thier Renault 5's with 3 grand speaker systems... yeah man, banging bruv:cool: ... rant over :-D |

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
I rarely nod at the trainers & hoodie scooter brigade but try to say hi to any learner who is taking it seriously (traffic permitting). After all, it's only a matter of time 'till they're riding an SV :)
Always make a point of giving the emergency services bikers a bog ole nod out of respect - The paramedics usually return the gesture but the police ALWAYS ignore me :) Maybe the hampshire lot just aren't that friendly... |
Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
Theres a guy who rides round by me in one piece racing leathers matching helmet all co-ordinated with his bike who refuses to nod back to me (maybe because I wear a hi-vis?).... I noticed the other day he's got an L plate hidden behind his screen! Annoyed me a bit more than it should.

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
Small chavs on thier scooters surrounded me !!! was the wierdest momment ever on the rode 6 of then 2 each side and 2 at the back and all revving.
I was so confused... So i played it matured and revved louder! :) |

I find some of the old school riders detailed above just do a tiny wave (raise two fingers) off the handle bars. But yeah they often don't, I find the worst are usually the hog riding, open faced lid wearing (with skeleton mouth ballaclava thing on) hells angel waist coat wearing riders (on the way back to their leafy suburb to see the wife and kids). always makes me chuckle |

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
I try to give a nod to everyone. I mostly get nods back from sportsbike riders, but not many from those listed in the first post on this thread. I always nod to learner riders too.
Not so bothered about Mr. Chav on his thrice crashed ped whose invested more money in his rusted aftermarket can than he has gear to protect himself. |
Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
But wait, their really cool... wish I had this brilliant idea!

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
I always try to wave to other riders....Unless they arn't wearing any gear (because muscle shirts are SOO COOL)...or are on a scooter. Although, waving for me is a little different then you guys (I can use my clutch hand, driving on the wrong side of the road and such) some poeple still can't seem to make the effort. It's always Harley riders for me...I wave to them, and they NEVER wave back....

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
I always give a nod when I can.
It tickles me sometimes when people pass and have clearly seen you but can't be asked to acknowledge you. I just tut, turn the bike around, try to knock them off their bike and if successful stand over them explaining they need some manners. Sometimes they are in a lot of pain but it's still worth explaining they shouldn't hurt my feelings. All in good fun though and I'm sure most take it in the right spirit. Same as when I do over petrol attendants for asking me to remove my lid really. I'm test riding a HD on Tuesday. If I get one I won't have to nod to anyone anymore. Sweet |
Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
i've observed over the last couple of months that i get rods or waves from different bikers on different bikes depending on what bike i'm on...
i'll usually give a nod or a wee wave to any biker apart from a scooter toting youth. when i was on dads Vstrom, anyone would nod and people on adventure bikes would give a friendly wave. but when i was on the husky, only the odd sportsbike rider would nod... :? wierdo's lol |

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
I always nod at other bikers, learners (they will be proper riders too one day ), and the emergency services .. have to say oop ere in t north, all the bike cops will nod back and will the paramedics.. harley and GS riders usually not ..

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
i'm a courier and see hundreds of bikers in town every day. most couriers are known to each other and will probably nod back. or, i actually get them to participate in a mexican wave or robotic wave waiting at the lights (because i can) others don't bother. when i go out of town, i pretty much nod at anything on two wheels, dunno why, just do, camaraderie thing i guess!!

Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
I'll nod, or wave if abroad, if I feel like it. Couldn't really care either way if someone goes past with out acknowledging me. Don't particularly buy into the biker 'family' so must nod at everything with two wheels that goes past.
|
Re: The bikers wave/nod, those who do/dont
Always nod but tend not to at Harley / Chop riders just don't like them coz they aint real bikers, also nod to learners as they are all up and coming SV riders :) ,, scooters are just bus price dodgers
