Christening Gift - Any ideas?
 

I've been asked to be a godfather (although I've indicated of the atheist kind!) so will need to get the god daughter a christening gift. My ideas so far have been premium bonds, beer tankards etc seem a bit off for a girl, any good non-cheesey ideas out there in the .org??

We've got boys, not girls, but the stuff we were given included silver picture frames (of various designs, some nicer than others) and little silver pots for first tooth, first lock of hair etc. They're 12 and nearly 11 now and we still use the tooth container when the tooth fairy calls!

Books are always good.... especially collectors editions that you can put an inscription in the front. Something like Winnie the Pooh or Enid Blyton (sp?).

I think silver things are usually given. Silver ornate spoon etc and some premium bonds would be nice (I like the little silver pot idea for the tooth fairy). Chrome can be used as a replacement so a nice Harley would be appropriate!

alternatively, put a deposit to pay the first 5 years of a private school education. I'm sure the parents would love it!

This site looks like it does some nice little boxes. They could be used for teeth when younger and then rings as the girl gets older.

money box?, silver crucifix, i got a prayer book when i was christened i guess it depends on how religious you and they are too

my son got a mixture of money boxes, tooth boxes and a St Christopher

I think premium bonds are an excellent idea. Bits of silver look nice but it's just more clutter.

How about a bible, even if you are an atheist, it is your "duty" as a god father to give her the information to help her make her own decisions about faith, having a bible will help her one day maybe to make a decision either way.

Maybe a bible and a copy of the God Delusion by Dawkins, that would make it a little more informed choice ;)

The parents are fine with me being an atheist, they see it as more of a moral/support role, offering guidance and support for life (and pointing out how nasty boys think!), not just faith. As such I think my duty is slightly different to a traditional god parent, but not dramatically so.

Tim, I think the idea of giving silver dates back to Victorian ages, before that it was custom to give money, but the Victorians combined that idea with form and function and gave silver items.

There is always the option of buying a silver coin from their year of birth.

Been asked again to do this, this time for my best mate, who lives next door to my other mate who I was godparent to his daughter for.

The new dilemma is that I did quite well last time, I was struck by inspiration, so my God Daughter got a nice first edition Beatrix Potter book (collectable, not cheap), a normal box set of Beatrix Potter books (grubby hands acceptable) and a couple of bottles of red for laying down.

So now I have to try and do equally as well for my new God Son (I'm still atheist btw!).

Any ideas? I was thinking perhaps some Thomas the Tank Engine first editions, but these aren't as collectable it seems. Hmm, anything else? Not silver or religious!!

As a parent I have to say the best Christening presents my kids got was from my younger brother who got both my boys silver picture frames for baby with name, date and weight spaces to be engraved onto the frame, beautiful.
