sv to R1 -insurance price.

I always loved the old R1's and probable will have one at some point. I'm fresh rider and I have my sv only for few months. I've hardly put any miles on it due to lack of time and I don't have any intentions of buying R1 any time soon. But was a bit bored today and decided to have a look how many thousands of pounds it would of cost me to insure R1 now. So I'm 25, license less than a year, driven a car for 7y and 4y NCB on it.
~£300 for fully comp for sv
£520-£700 fully comp for 99' R1 :o

I was expecting at least another number in front of it cos before I bought sv I was looking at some ss600 and insurance was like £400-600 so I opted for sv.
Can someone explain? Is it normal?

I did a quote for an 07 R6, 2y NCB @ 18y/o, came back at £2k, did the same quote but changed age to 21 instead of 18 came back at £750.

When I turn 21 I'll have 4y NCB so it better come back cheaper than £750 if I haven't had one by then, which is looking unlikely as I'll determin if I want to keep the SV after this summer.

Age is a massive thing on insurance, after 2 years of riding, my insurance paper work says in the notes section.

"Young & Inexperianced rider" yet my mate who has only just got a bike who is 21, no NCB, same insurer, 4 doors away & his says nothing.

That's not bad.

I'm just under 20, will have had my licence for 2 years in July and my SV will cost like £700 FC :(

Just put my details in as if I had just turned 20 (my actual birthday is mid March) and it's £200 cheaper FC, and £45 cheaper for TPFT, which I insure my bike as as it's only a curvy and not worth much.

I cannot imagine how bad it will be by the time my boys (11 and 12 years old) get to need insurance, the prices are going up so fast, and the real thing is with bikes that you do not tend to damage other people's property the way you do with a car, the only thing you damage is yourself and your bike. They just load it because they can.

I've just started looking at a car. Passed test in Sept 11, insurance on a 2001 1.25 Fiesta is £1700, or £1900 for a 1.8TD Focus.

As I'm commuting down the motorway next year daily, think I'll pay the extra £200 and have a decent engine which is better equipped for decent mileage!

I'm convinced TPFT is the way to go. It encourages me to ride more sensibly and saves me a packet on insurance. 30 y/o, 3 years no claims, £66. I don't think I'd ever go fully comp unless my bike was a significant investment.

I paid £4500 in cash for my bike and it's insured fully comp. It's up for renewal in April and I'll go TPFT aswell. I have so many modifications on the thing that they wouldn't pay out anyway...

I also don't use my bike for much else other than pleasure now so makes perfect sense.

I found this thread quite interesting! I did something similar a few years ago, I was riding a 636 kawasaki and just for the laugh started looking at quotes for Blackbirds, these were coming back at less than £100 more than the Kwak. I then thought 'in for a penny' and went for a Hayabusa, again I was suprised, so suprised in fact that I went and got one!

As for the Third Party stuff, Ive just been plaing round with some quotes. Im 30 years old, no claims, been riding 10 years and have 5 years no claims (or maybe six, but Ive been using 5!). Quoted for a 2006 Sv650 TPFT at £58.42, for fully comp it was £80.49! Without any no claims TPFT was £78 and FC was £130.

Its enough to make me want to get a second bike, funnily enough an RS125 came back at £50ish too.

Seems though that the age and time spent riding is worth a lot more than the NCB for me?

I wouldn't mind my quotes to come back that cheap, TBH. I'd gladly pay tripple your FC quotes without thinking twice.

I had an RS125 for my 1st, £640 3rdP only. first year riding no NCB 2nd year it went up by £40 even though I gained 1y NCB.

I agree with the last part, NCB are to just encourage people to drive like nuns but that doesn't always happen.

Re: sv to R1 -insurance price.

My RSVR comes back at just over £200 FC still! I have been there and paid my dues though, I paid something like £400 for the RS125 TPFT, £600+ for the CBR6, £350ish for the ZX6R and £450ish for my Hayabusa.

Hasn't always been plain sailing!! Ive been 3rd party with some awful companies and got completely shafted on a couple of occasions!

Turning 30 has brought it down quite a lot though
