First ride on my sv WOW

So I picked up my 09 plate sv650s on Monday the 14th, the day after my 21st birthday and supprise supprise it starts to snow :(

The garage offer to deliver it as the roads were white and for the last two week I've been running to my bedroom window every morning like a 5 year old praying them roads were clear!

After a holiday to vennice (present off the girlfriend) I come back and still snow!!!

However yesterday the day came where the roads were their normal selves and I ditched my plans to spend the day on it!

So, my first thought is WOW. 33bhp? Feels like I'm sitting on a rocket!!! More power than I had ever expected from a restricted bike.

Don't get me wrong I'm not an experienced rider and this is my first ever bike and I have only ridden a 125 to do my test on but gosh, did not expect that.
Y
So, it's even better what I thought. I've lost my voice from singing with joy and screaming with fear in my helmet today haha.

Just thought id share this as none of the women in my house seem to understand me excitement :)

Gotta love a good shout when you try something new and fast.
Did the same with my first tuned two stroke 125 at 18 and again on the er5 during my bike training.. Enjoy it!

A restricted SV is such a capable bike and a great machine to learn how to ride a big bike. My restriction came to an end last year and I was surprised at how much of the power is kept when restricted, I did not really notice the extra power until I hit the motorway.

Ride safe, keep her shiny side up and watch out for loonies in cages. :D

Wow, your girlfriend must be rich! :O

Yea, I felt like that the first time on a 125, the first time with the 33bhp SV and the first time I unrestricted my SV :D

Enjoy and ride safely :)

i couldn't agree with this point more!! it's the torque of a good old v twin, the sv really is a fantastic bike to do your 2 years restricted on. i couldn't believe the lack of difference except on the motorways i felt when i had it de-restriced after my 2 years were up.

I've got an '02 curvy sat in my garage next to my cbr 125.
I'm in the process of doing my test, (no chance of lessons at the moment with this weather) and everytime I go in the garage I feel a little bit more depressed haha.
CAN'T WAIT ! Although I'll be restricted to 50mph when I pass my test, which sucks so much...

Confused why will you be restricted to 50mph I thought the new thing was 44bhp instead of the 33bhp.

Surely your 125 is faster than 50mph so I don't understand why you will be on a bigger faster bike and having to ride slower:smt018

33bhp feels like a rocket? I remember that feeling, then full power feels even better.

That thirst gets worse.. I've just bought a ZX6R for my 21st Birthday.

Enjoy it, they are good bikes!

Can't imagine having to wait two years to get a fully powered bike. Is there any reason people go for a restricted license over doing the DAS? I can't get my head around the logic.

Skybaba 30-01-13 10:14 AM

Younger people need to restrict their bikes.......rules rules rules.

You always get used to the power. You always want more ... on the straight anyway.

The gixxer 750 is comfortable after only about 6 months, though I am still scared of 1st gear power wheelies. [-o< I reckon by the end of this summer I'll be wondering what a litre+ bike feels like.

Re: First ride on my sv WOW

I definitely reckon it's worth doing some kind of advanced riding course to get corners nailed properly. I know I will now I'm getting the Triple..simply because I think I'd die inside if I binned that badboy.

Re: First ride on my sv WOW

I had to do the restricted test because I was 20 at the time. Wasn't 21 until the 13th on jan and the law changed on the 19th of jan so I would have had 6 days to do both parts of the test on a 500cc bike which, with no experiance is not realistic and not worth the risk so I did my restricted test last year and saved up for a nice bike I could restrict. I don't mind anyway, from never having ridden a bike to having a 70bhp sv would have been far too much for me. 33 horses is more than enough for now.

650 30-01-13 02:55 PM

Re: First ride on my sv WOW

Ah that's fair enough, I've completely forgotten what those little laws are tbh, they never applied to me as I did my DAS when I was 29. Good attitude to have though, don't think I could be that patient.

The thing with bike's is, you soon get used to the power and crave a little more oomph or something a bit different. After I took a Street Triple for a test ride, the SV felt all clunky and slow revving in comparison (just my opinion, before anyone scalds me haha!) so I'm happy to be moving on. No doubt I'll return to a v-twin at some point though, nothing beats the noise they make!

Re: First ride on my sv WOW

Glad you're enjoying the bike :)

While you can always use a little extra power, I've actually ended up going to the SV from the ZX6, and I'm a better rider for it. The fact I've not put the ZX6 back together for a couple of years is neither here nor there... The point is that "big bikes are for people that can't make little bikes go fast" and the SV restricts quite well :)

Re: First ride on my sv WOW

When I rode the SV to it's new owner and waved it goodbye I made a v-log. The lack of power felt disappointing on the straights, but in the twisty bits I loved it and didn't want to let it go (except for a few corners where I wished I was on GSXR suspension). I do feel a lot of people crave power to make up for not pushing themselves in the corners, but they are two different types of giggles! Acceleration giggles are not the same as cornering giggles. Acceleration giggles are safe power trip giggles, while cornering giggles are AAGHGHGHHHHH I ALMOST DIED AND NOW I FEEL LIKE A RIDING GOD giggles.

Cornering giggles are better than power giggles, except when you're a yellow belly or hungover. :D

^Apologies for typing all that garbage in this thread.

tis an age thing, you have to be 21 or over when you take the test, otherwise you have to wait 2 years on 33bhp and even if you turn 21 after year (like i did), you still have to do the full 2 years of 33bhp.

I wish I could claim I made it up, but damned if I can remember where on earth I first read it.

What I will say is overtaking a selection of full-fat sports bikes on a ratty girl's bike on a track day leaves very little argument about whether you beat them because the bike was this year's model with the slightly lower stiction coating on the USD forks... :D

Re: First ride on my sv WOW

Awesome mate, the best ride of my life was when i test rode the dealers 650s, passed my test and went straight there with the paperwork from the test centre, as i had just passed they got a mechanic to go out with me. The nut bar took out one of their worx gixer 750's and just said "follow me as best you can" went hooning round some back roads near the dealers. It was the quickest and fastest bike i had been on, previous being the ER5 for the test. It absolutely blew my mind how quick it was, we hit a straight and he just disappeared and without realising it i was nearing 3 figures on the clock.

Hands down best ride i had.

I never rode a restricted bike so dont know how it compares, but my understanding is that it only really limits the top end (Apologies if that is wrong)?? but the torque the bike has in the mid range is immense!

Enjoy the ride and keep her shiny side up!

You can have a lot of fun on a restricted SV!

Mine is getting de-restricted on the 19th :)

Have fun!
