Pointy engine temperature?

Hi,

As a fairly new owner of an SV I thought it be best I asked this question on here, recently ive noticed that the engine temperature is frequently reaching high temperatures (e.g. 102 degrees) whilst riding in traffic. Is this fairly normal ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

P.S it’s a 2007 SV650S

Thanks

if you are in traffic then yes thats fine, mine does the same but then when riding at a consistent speed it usually stays around 85 :)

Thanks a lot, yeah that seems about the same as mine. I started to panic when i first saw it reach 100, i thought it was going to start whistling!

Re: Engine Temperature

hah yeah, saying that it doesnt seem to take much time in traffic for it to rapidly increase, is yours similar?

Re: Engine Temperature

Engine coolant is under pressure, so it won't boil at those temperatures. Mine is much the same around town, I've definitely seen 102 degrees but as soon as the fan kicks in the temperature goes down until it switches off again.

Re: Engine Temperature

so far i've never had the fan kick in but the bike has only ever got to 102

Re: Engine Temperature

Fan kicking in is a fairly regular occurrence for me, but I have the lower fairings fitted and I think that doesn't help things. Also ride across London fairly regularly which is, as I'm sure you can imagine, not exactly free flowing traffic.

The fan kicks in a 104 or so usually do as long as you are under that, or at that and the fan is going you should be fine.

From memory and without looking, I think the owners manual states that you should start to panic when the temp reaches 120 degrees, although I would be a little inclined to start to panic before it got that high.

back in 2005 when i was a courier using my SV, the temp got up to 110c - the fan wasnt kicking in because the end of a biro had caught in the blades!

no idea how long that situation had been occurring but when i removed the biro cap, the fan worked and no damage had happened, as far as i know!!!!

Re: Pointy engine temperature?

Fan on my 2006 kicked in at 106, but it only ever got that hot in mid summer traffic - keep riding in the countryside and you'll be fine :p
