SV650 or ZXR400???

Hello everyone!

New to the forum, will probably ask a few silly questions that have been asked a million times before so I apologise now :)

I have a mate who has a R1 track bike, awesome bit of kit! But I'm thinking of getting into track days myself and would like your opinions on a 1st track bike.

Either a SV650 or ZXR400 are what I'm thinking.

Thanks in advance
Matt

The avalibility of spare parts would be my main train of thought.
But id not go for either of thoes two options

Id have a look about for a CBR 600 steel frame. Cam chain tensioners aside pretty well built.
the R6 and Gixer 6 are also good bikes.
If you have the basic skills the SV s suspension can quite cheaply be sorted so its a valid option.

Ok, thank you for that. I do like the newer shape R6's and I've heard they make pretty good track bikes. Bit too expensive for me at the min tho. The CBR, is that an RR?

Was this what you was thinking of?

At the minute I'm just looking around, gauging what's around for what money really. I want to get it for as cheap as possible whatever I buy lol! As I've got to get a bike trailer too! Plus I'm building a new shed to accommodate a new bike!

If you get a road.going one you can sell the fairings . So if you want an R6 you might be able to ofset some costs.

I know exactly what you mean, I've given up doing my bike test to get a track bike and get my ACU licence. I've got 2 kids, got married 3 weeks ago too! If it's not time, it's money!

Re: SV650 or ZXR400???

Of the 2 original choices I'd be thinking SV650.
The main reason as already discussed is availability of spares.

The others aren't wrong though, any Super sport 600 from the late 90's onwards in good mechanical condition makes a great track bike. The main questions should be:
1) How much money do I want to spend on a bike that is realistically almost certain to be crashed?
2) Do I want to race, in which case are there any classes that I'd like to race in?

With point 2 you could find that some of the pre-injection or steel framed classes are cheaper to get into because you won't be next to a 2013 spec bike with full Ohlins on your 2001 GSXR.

I won't be racing, it's purely for a hobby mate, but I totally understand what your saying. Thanks for the input 👍

Once the bug has bitten ;)
if you like twins then ER6 ,s dominate mini twin racing.

Keep an eye on gumtree etc.
There was a zxr 7 in colchester went for 850

Re: SV650 or ZXR400???

I had a zxr 400 for 2 days the reg/rec died, according to the bloke I bought it from, I gave it back to him, so I bought an sv650 on a y plate for 180 LESS than what i was paying for the zxr.

I prefer the sv, handles better, PULLS like its half the weight of the zx, sounds meaner than the zx, also insurance on sv is cheaper (somehow) than a zx, £70 cheaper in fact at a mere 260 tpft with pillion cover 8 points declared and also 3rd party on any other bike.

All round the sv is winning for me, only thing I might chop it in for wouls be an MT-09

The SV is slightly edging it! Been doing a bit of research at work today, killed the iPhone battery, and the SV seems to be very popular.
