Removing wheels to replace tyres
My chain was a little loose so I was off to Halfords to buy some new spanners which I don't yet own to adjust it. Get half way, van driver warns me my tyre is flat. Pull over and there's a screw sunk into it. Great.
Is it worth removing the wheels myself so the garage have to do less when it comes to fitting the tyres? Will it reduce the cost enough for what the efforts worth? And if it is worth it, how difficult is it to do? I am a 100% bike novice. I can do the odd adjustments, but never done anything proper. Any potential dangers to watch out for? And finally, again if it's worth the effort, does anyone have a paddock/centre stand I could borrow? I'd be very grateful. |

Have done ta. Also any suggestions on a good place to get the tyres done in Manchester? I am thinking to go down the pilot roads road, is it worth splashing out that little extra to get PR3s instead of just the PRs? Oh no  https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...62134704_n.jpg |
Re: Lend me a paddock stand. Manchester.
What part of Manchester are you in ? There's a place in Farnworth called B & C I used at end of last year who will look after you. You can borrow a paddock stand, tools and advice from me if you are anywhere near SK5. I've also used TST at Risley near Warrington.

Im in Moss Side. B&C sounds good - I assume you were entirely happy with them? I will give them a ring as soon as! I'll pm you too. |
Re: Lend me a paddock stand. Manchester.
There's a very good mobile fitter around Manchester way....I've used him a couple of times and he was very competitive with the ride in/ride out places.

How much did you pay for ride in/ride out? Was it for two tyres? Quote:
I think I might go for ride in ride out though in the end, if it's not that much more cost wise. A lot less hassle. I don't know what I'm doing with removing the wheels, is it that complicated? Also with the mobile service, will he come with everything necessary to remove the wheels etc. and he'll put it back together? I do have common sense, I swear, just trying to get over the cost of two new tyres with beer :D |
Re: Lend me a paddock stand. Manchester.
B&C did a good job but Mr Pigs is closer to you and he knows his stuff. This is how you get both wheels off with only one paddock stand.

I think you might be missing the point with the mobile fitter. He comes to you, in a van, with your new tyres, with all the necessary equipment to remove the wheels, the tyres and put the new tyres on etc.
He even has a card machine if you want to pay by debit/credit card. Takes the hassle out of riding somewhere with a nail in your tyre and you don't have to wait around like you might do if you went somewhere that had a queue of people having tyres fitted or the mechanics were busy servicing bikes. When i've had tyres fitted from him before they were the same price if not cheaper than ride in ride out places. |
Re: Lend me a paddock stand. Manchester.
I have used B&C quite a few times, well recommended.

I get the idea with the mobile service - seems perfect, I'm just trying to cut down on costs as much as possible. I've been told I'll be paying maybe £10 extra for him to take the wheels off and put them back on, so then it's not worth me doing it myself. Whose used the mobile bike tyre services before? happy? I think I'll be getting roadsmarts. It was a toss up between them and pilot roads, I gather roadsmarts are a little more modern with being dual compound. |
Re: Lend me a paddock stand. Manchester.
I've also used Bike Tyre Services before, though i took my loose wheel with similar puncture to thier base in Sale. They have been there for a few years now.
They did a profesional plug and patch repair for very reasonable price. Tyre is still going strong. |

+1 , you can lend my abba stand if you want but you wont save much by removing them your self. I don't have the time at the moment to do it with you and to be honest I only trust my self to work on my own bike don't really like tinkering with others. Matt at biketyreservice has good prices and I think you only save 5 quid per tyre if you take in lose wheels. |
Re: Lend me a paddock stand. Manchester.
Okay so I've decided to go with B&C performance tyres, they're offering roadsmart 2s for £240, ride in ride out, and I get a £25 cashback deal. It's a good price, but my wallet won't know what hit it.
I was going to go with biketyreservices but this deal is just a little better. And for interest, you save £15 per wheel when doing a loose fitting - so not too bad, that's the difference between PR3s and PR4s. If I had a car and the tools needed to remove the wheels I would - but I think it's not going to be worth it. Or maybe when I get there I'll remove the front wheel.. should be easy enough, and extra £15 wouldn't go amiss either. I don't know. Thank you everyone for your kind offers and advice, I was panicking to begin with but things seem sorted now. |
Re: Lend me a paddock stand. Manchester.
Out of interest, what was the difference in cost between B&C and BTS?
|
Re: Lend me a paddock stand. Manchester.

It varied, but works out at the same to be honest. BTS don't do a mobile service any more. But then BTS don't deal directly with dunlop so you can't get cashback deals - B&C do hence the deal. So BTS asked for £265 for PR3s, and you can get £25 cashback from that. If you bring the tyres in yourself, both say £50 for fitting, ride in ride out (both wheels). And then it's £15 off for each loose tyre. Hope that helps :) |
Re: Lend me a paddock stand. Manchester.
That B&C deal look good. I got my PP3's from there and got a £25 fuel card direct from Michelin. I was going to pm you back about how much it cost to fit internet tyres at these places, but you have already done your homework.

Not concerned about the tyres being aligned?

How do you get rid of the old ones? I got collared trying to dump one at the local tip and was told the only thing I could do was pay a tyre place to take it off me. |
Re: Lend me a paddock stand. Manchester.
I guess each area has it's own recycling policy. Here in Manchester/Cheshire they have seperate bays for tyres on rims and bare tyres, and almost anything else to think of it. It's a bit of a pain sometimes but since they started accepting this stuff fly tipping down the lanes has reduced substantially. They are not tips anymore like we all know, they are recycling centres!!!!!!
If you are a bit wary about doing your own tyres with your expensive new ones just pick up an old wheel with a tyre on and practice on that a few times, it isn't that hard really. Probably the hardest bit is breaking the bead of the old tyre. I just drive over it with the van, i find this is the easiest way. Balancing also is easy and quite theraputic in a way. Tyre shops like to make their mark up on selling you tyres so obviously not so happy for you to bring your own internet stuff in for them to fit. Swings & roundabouts, I just fitted a set of Pirrelli Angels got for £150 but Avon Storms are to be had for about the same. It's a big saving doing your own if you get through a couple of changes a year. |
