Recommend me a good route from Lond to Soton?

Travelling down Saturday morning, and would like to avoid the motorway drudgery.

Get yourself to Gatwick area not really sure about that bit of the journey, but then onto the A 272 to Billingshurst then down to Arundel and along the A27. Or straight down the A272 right to Winchester and then down through Hursley and then onto Romsey and then Southampton. Not bad biking roads.

thor 16-02-06 02:30 PM

Gotcha. I'll be starting from Purley so I'll be fairly South to begin with anyway.

diamond 16-02-06 02:37 PM

Alternatively you could head for Brighton and then come all the way along the A27 but not so interesting.

I've done the london - brighton quite a few times so not so interesting personally anyway.

have a butchers at a map, get onto the A272 as soon as you can, then head west towards winchester.

You coming from Croydon area IIRC?

The caterham bypass, A22 to the A272

thor 16-02-06 03:07 PM

Yeah, I've moved but the SV is parked outside Kate's house so I'll be off to purley first. Caterham bypass is a great road to be sure!

Also just after Forestdale, take the A275.

thor 16-02-06 03:17 PM

Can't find forestdale. Where abouts is it?

Forest Row perhaps, at Wych Cross. Helluva long way round to go to S'oton though.

Anyway, my go now: Purley->Reigate->Dorking->A24->Beare Green->A29->Billingshurst->A272->Winchester. Do J10-J11 on the M3 then use the B3335 and A335 to finish up with.

Yep, thats the kiddy

diamond 16-02-06 04:32 PM

Don't bother with the M3, come out of winchester on the A3090 towards hursley, that takes you down through Hursley to Romsey, then you can jump straight on the M271 and 3 or 4 miles later you can go along the A35 and your right in the city centre without going through any big patches of low speed limits.

Previous routes I've done:

A30/A31/B road around Eastleigh - OK, there are some **** pounding bumps on the A31 but this was perfectly doable on a scooter and few speed cameras. Plus you can pick up the M3 at pretty much any point if you are running late.

A3(M for bits of it)/A27 - fast enough, some nice corners but fairly dull for most the way.

Most of the time I was trying to get there quickly rather than having fun, but these routes are both reasonably fast and have at least some challenges. Never found much of a fun road but there must be some interesting B roads etc on the way. Seem to remember A32 (Alton -> Hedge End) wasn't too bad, depends which part of soton you're heading to.

True, but it will make me trust my tyres even less. Damn stock crap...

And besides, seeing my friend is just an excuse to ride

Flamin_Squirrel 17-02-06 09:33 AM

Joe and I can give you a good deal on new rubber

thor 17-02-06 12:09 PM

I'll send you a pm Jordan.

thor 20-02-06 03:12 PM

Well the A272 is indeed a fine road!

In the end I was running slightly late so I took the caterham bypass -> M25 -> M23 -> A272 all the way to Winchester and then M3 to Soton. Came back via M3 all the way :(

A nice biking fix, but nowhere near enough!
