Wheel Painting-Cheap home jobbie - Slight change of plans :)
Recommendations on paint to get please. Ideally one that doesn't require any priming or clear coat   .
Ok if I must, primer, main colour and clear coat. Cheers Ben |
i just used the standard halfords paint. went on fine. didnt use any primer, just rubbed it down, sprayed the inner and polished the outer, then laquered the whole lot. came out pretty well. i'll add a pic later

Apophes, it's either going to be black or silver. Most probably black. Cheers Ben |
if black the plasticote what ever its called one is great has a very slight metallic dust in it and when clear lacquered looks a1 the wheels were the best bit of me m8es old fzr lol
think its this stuff tins look about right http://www.plasti-kote.co.uk/Product/pcode---4311 |
cant find a pic at the moment, ill take a picture tomorrow if i get some time.

Try Hammerite smooth you'll need the hammerite primer as well it goes on nice and thick takes a while to harden but it doesn't chip or flake!! I used it on my CB1 and it stood up to 2 winters with no probs!!
|
A lot of people recommend the Halfords engine paint, it's apparently very resistant to dents/bumps.
|
Thanks for all suggestions.
I'm definitely going for black now but would like Glossy black. With that in mind are there any suggested so far that is a definite 'no' ? Cheers Ben |

black gloss..... nail varnish only has a small brush and the bottles aint to big either |
Ive used black plasticoat. Seems to have resisted well. The chips that are there seem to be from when a tyre was fitted and also me removing the brake calipers.

OK not going to be painting it now. A mate is going to help me by sticking it with some bits he is powder coat and so it's only going to cost me £35.
At that price I thought pay the extra £20-£25 rather than doing it myself 8) :) . Now colour :P . Satin black or Gloss black :-k . I might end up not using the wheel in the end so which colour reckon easiest to rid of if I decide to sell it. (I'm colour blind-only half joking) Cheers Ben |
Be careful when the wheels go in the oven to finish them off that the heat doesn't build too quick or you'll lose the bearings and possibly distort the bearing carriers. Happened to the wheels of a mate of mine who had his done. Apparently the guy wasn't au fait with bike wheels and screwed the pair of them up. As it was being done as an "under the counter/ thru the back door job" my mate had no comeback. Cost him a new set of Gixxer thou' wheels. Him not happy!

Standard set of wheels or is the rear the B12 5.5?
If so, you got a "service" set-up for getting the spacers made up? ;) I'm stopping myself from buying a new rear brake disc and painting the wheels incase I can get a B12 wheel fitted. :D Of which, I should really buy at some point... |
My brother has had his bandit wheels done in gloss black and they look very very nice! I'd recommend gloss :D

Woo. :D
I'll be on the lookout for a cheap wavey jobbie then. My current rear is incredibly bad, can feel the difference in diameter when running my fingers down it. Feels like it could break. All year bandit 1200 wheels the same or should I go for a specific one. |
I think all the straight-spoked B12 wheels are the same... Not 100%.
|
Bellerophon, it'll be OK as the guy does loads of bike stuff. I'll be sure to let you know if the wheel is still round when it's done though  .
gator, did I mention B12 :?. It's a secret what wheel I'm getting done  . I'm finding it a bit difficult finding a B12 wheel but looking at one at the moment . One vote for gloss black then  Thanks andy. Cheers Ben |
