Airbags on motorbikes?

OK I came across a vid of (sounds swedish) a motorbike being tested with airbags and head on collisions.

Seems interesting enough but I don't like the idea of having one in front of me that may go off by accident >_<

I would post a link but it's on live media (used to be called ogrish) and may have some mature content
(you would have to go out of your way to look for it though as there are no links directly from the page with the relevant video...)

some testing was done some time ago by the Dot, and the results were seen as encouraging until it was pointed out most bike accidents are not head on, and the airbags could retain the rider on the machine causing as much injury or more than if he were thrown clear.

It's an old chestnut that makes the light of day every so often

Cheers Mark.

Ahh thats the end of that then

Thanks ;)

The new Honda Goldwings have them if I'm not mistaken - but thats nearly a car so doesnt really count.

PsychoCannon 11-01-07 03:57 PM

Anything that has air con doesn't count as a bike imho =p

How about an airbag jacket?

Seems like a good idea to me.

 Great Idea but I have visions of me going *pffffft* and turning into the Marshmallow man everytime I get off my bike as I KNOW i'll forget to unplug myself more often than not ;)

remember seatbelts were seen as dangerous when they came out. People thought that being thrown away from the car was a safer option! (in the same way when electric hobs came out people reacted the same way as people worry over microwaves now). So maybe in a few years they will become standard. Testing or not i'd rather have one than not - maybe not the first generation airbag though. It seems sensible to me :o)

I was worried about that as well when I first got mine but it takes a big tug for it to go off (30kg!) and I have never had an 'accidental discharge' even when Ive forgotten to disconnect it and Ive had it about 3 years!

Surprised they haven't taken off more than they have actually.

PsychoCannon 15-01-07 11:26 PM

They've been around that long?!!
And that 30KG sounds like a great idea, takes away that accidental discharge problem (hopefully).

@Bigape - Sounds like windows releases to me :)
Let the suckers take the first few releases and I'll jump on after the 3rd service pack to fix the service pack to fix the bug caused when they fixed the bluescreen =p

There are several companies which do them all based around the same (simple air canister) system

For Hit Air
http://www.bulletmc.com/shop/index.p...wCat&catId=839

IXS stunt jacket available from J & S
http://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/hermes/shop/7,1,100

Spidi version from any Spidi main dealer
http://www.spidi.it/spidi-jsp/index.jsp?lang=en and go to safety lab section.

They actually tested some of them on 'Party Cycle' a while back. Stuntmen lowsided at medium speed and slid quite a way. All walked away without injury and all were impressed with how the jackets performed.

HTH

Just thought Id bump this post in the hope that if just 1 person buys an airbag jacket and is saved from serious injuries or worse that would be a result :)
