if not, then you'll just have the adjust your wheel back a bit to take up the extra link's worth of slack (since you sprocket is now 1 link less long) |
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
cool and is it easy to change?
|
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
Very easy But you will need a strongarm/breakerbar! If you have a haynes manual it explains it in detail in there if not I will scan the relivent pages for you and email it to you.

Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
No No and errr NO
|
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
demon tweeks or any local bike store will be able to get one. only cost about £14. renthal cost a bit more. not much though. i went for the 14toth front sprocket. yet to try it though. to take it off, all i did was wack a bit of timber through the wheel and against the swingarm to stop the wheel from turning, ( i wrapped it in a towel to protect the wheel and swingarm) then unfold the washer infront of the sprockt, (you may need to replace it mind) then with a large breaker par and a bit of brute stregnth undo it. then the sprocket shoudl just simply slide off. eaasy. then just do the reverse putting it back on.

Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
i have a 12 tooth off a DR350:confused:

Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
The SV is a bit of an odd beast when it comes to chains. It uses a 525, most middleweights and larger use 530. Oh, except in race conditions, where a lighter 520 is usual I think.
So to answer your question.... Nope mate, a DR one probably wont fit! Come on, it's a few quid new!!!:smt064 |
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
so I know I should search but to get better acceleration.??
up on the back ? or down on the front? or what>>>?? anyone done it- whats the bestcombo and which needs a longer chain? |
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
drop the front to 14
|
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
Are u running a standard SVS rear cog just now?
Going up one made a noticeable improvement to acceleration, the bike felt more 'lively' eg. overtaking and going up thru the gears from standstill. Dropping to a 14 front is what I'm doing next, I'm expecting more of the same, but there is bound to be a drop in top speed (i think it will be about 10mph down), something i'm not that bothered about. My chain and current sprockets are nearly new, so i'm going to experiment by swapping 14/15 front, and 45/46 rears til i get something i like. |
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
not to happy about losing top end speed, but going to give it a go as i think it will be better. & i dont do much over 110ish

ya haggis standard rear.
and I think u pipped me to a 14 tooth front that was up for grabs on here !! yep- u sure did!... now I having to pay £16.. dammit-- I am on here loads too- how i missed that I will never know.. such is life |
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
I have an unused 15 which i gladly offer u as a consolation prize.....:smt101
I think i will try out 14/46 when i eventually get the bike on the road, and if thats just toooo extreme and stunt biased (indicated by frequency of slap on head by pillion) i can swap to 45. I think it will be fine tho....:smt036 |

Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
Quiff, you done this yet?
A few things to consider. It will make the bike rev higher in top. This i found a pain when on the motorway. It will also redline in top...if you need it to! It drank slighly more fuel as well. However around town its a hoot. I bought mine directly from Talon. No point in a renthal or anything like that. You cant see it, and the std alloy sprockets are fairly soft! Changing to a 14t, will shorten the life of your chain...apprently. 14t is the equivilent to a 48t on the rear or there abouts.(45t Std) but you wont need to change the chain. As for fitting. Its not to difficult. Take off sprocket cover, tap down crush washer, remove the clutch worm drive(for access) then undo the nut(try it 1st, sometimes its loose...if not, then a substantial lump of wood through the rear wheel, a breaker bar and 32mm socket iirc). Then rear up on paddock stand, adjust the wheel so its fully loose. Remove sprocket. Replace sprocket, tighten bolt as much as you can for now, adjust chain, lower bike onto floor, lump of wood through wheel, tighten the nut up (Dont worry about the tourque value, but just DFT, crush washer around the nut, replace worm drive, fit cover, job done :) |

im planning to give it go & find out, |
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
No. Even though 90% of all my riding is in town, i went back to a 15t when i had the chain and sprockets fitted. Its ok, but just made the bike to buzy for my liking

the 14 tooth will suck on the way up to AR07 & north/south then, from wales |
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
Im happy with the std gearing. If i wanted any different then all i would put on would be the Naked kit +1 on rear. I have had the bike to long to faff now. She might get a tidy up and spray but thats about it.
As the washer isnt really a crush washer, you can use it again. I just bent it in a different place. If you really want, then replace it, but its not nessacary |
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
I went down to 14 on the front and found it plain awful on the motorway! Good for wheelies but you will be very revey all the time!

I aint done it yet- got one coming- cost me £15 ! cos I missed the tenner one on here. but its a giggle isnt it.. I like tinkering.. makes me feel manly- I do a lot of town riding and nipping 10 miles to my mums to see my invalid daddy so should be a hoot.. I will pop it on and try it.. if as per Andy pitkin " i donnt liike iiit" can flog it on here for a tenner- there's enough folk wanting to do it .. ... just interestd to see the diference in accelleration and loss on top end and fuel consumption.. I dont coomute and use the bike for fun so on a 300 mile day rideout if i costs me an extra fiver so what- its life..! I get about 135 mile on a tank at moment.. so- we will wait and see. other jobs left- high link pipe dog bone raisers undertray and tail tidy carbon mirrors.. then job done.! see one minute I selling her next I spoiling her and blinging her up.! |
Re: best place for a 14 tooth front sprocket
ive fitted a 14 front and i think its a 47 on the rear, as apparently that was the highest i could go without going for stupid stunt size sprockets. yet to see what its like, should be on the road in a week or two. as i mainly hoon around town, i need it with better acceleration for overtaking and filtering. the bonus will be better wheelies. i very rarely do motorway work, but i might keep a spare chain, 15 front and a 46 rear when i do end up doing long distances. just so it doesnt hack me off.
