Km/h - Mp/h Speedometer

Hi Everyone, :)

new to this forum and the UK after relocating a few months ago from Stockholm Sweden. I brought with me my SV650S '04 and I'm currently trying to register it in the UK. Right now I wish I'd never brough it with me in the first place due to the amount of paperwork and s**t (pardon my language) I have to deal with but seeing as I did bring it I need to sort it out :(

Paperwork aside, I need to make some mods to the bike - mainly two, speedometer and headlight. Now the SV650S has a digital speedometer and one would assume it would be a setting somewhere to change this from Km/h to Mp/h (i'm going down to the garage later to see if I can change it somehow myself). I've checked with Suzuki in the UK and couple of dealers back in Sweden but noone can actually give me any conclusive answers to this question. I'd rather not buy a new speedometer since that would cost a lot more than I was expecting and in that case I might as well take the bike back to Sweden.

Does anyone have any experience on this/or knows if the speedometers can be reconfigured?

Thanks for your time everyone.

Cheers,
Dion

I've got a couple of 03 SV Thou's and you can indeed change the digital speedo from MPH to KPH and back by simply holding down the ADJ button for 3 seconds whilst the display is showing ODO (not Trip A or B). Comes in really handy for trips into Europe.

Seeing as you will be in Madchester, you need to catch up with the Pennine Massive, we ride some of the best roads in the country. Hence the south comes north pilgrimage to permit the southern people to try our roads. Plus the annual rideout of the SV650.org is to be in the north west this year. Our first true meetup/run will be the catherine wheel run on 14th April. A group of manchester lads will be meeting at Worlsey for this. see http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=84805 for details

Thanks mate! Let's hope I've got the bike sorted out soon cause I keep seeing all the bikes coming out with the improvement of the weather and it gets my adrenaline pumping.

I hope it doesn't cost too much to re-register your bike here. I was going to take my 1994 Vauxhall Cavalier to Hungary but it was going to cost £2,600 to register it over there!!!

Well the figures I've got so far are:

£75 for an original certficate of conformity (from Japan!!!)
£65 for a certficate from the VCA
£38 for registration with the DVLA

All this to do something that has already been done once in another EU member state... You got to love that red tape...

On top of those fixed fees there are additional costs for tax and any modifications. Hopefully I won't have to get a new speedometer and I can sort out the headlight at a cheap cost. Had I known that it was going to be this much hassle I honestly would've sold it in Sweden and bought another one here.

It doesn't seem to work on my speedometer, there might be a difference in the software installed in the ones you get with the SVs in the UK... Too bad cause I was hoping it would spare me the rather huge expense of getting a new speedometer...

I'll have a dig around on the net and see if I find anything. Doesn't look like I'll be driving anytime soon...

Damn :( Can anyone else confirm that the procedure works or do I just have a weird pair of clocks? Thinking about it - it worked for a mate on his Thou when we were in France too...

I can confirm this worked on my girlfriend's new '03 650. The garage she bought it from accidentally set it to Km/h and didn't know how to set it back.

Was very pleased that its so easy to change back to mph

Apparently it is possible to change on UK spec SVs but not continental ones :( (I feel discriminated against!). :|

My options now are to install a recalibration device to convert the speedometer or get a UK one - and I have no idea how much that will cost me in parts and labour, probably upwards £500-600. :smt091

It seems to me though that it should still be possible to change somehow as it is a digital one. I will continue to search the net and hopefully find something useful.

Anyone have experience on recalibration? Is it recommended and will it have the desired effect - and more importantly will it pass MOT and DVLA registration??? :smt100

Dion

apparently theres 2 versions of the speedo. One requires both buttons to be pressed instead for 10 seconds on the odometer setting.

I know who he is and his real name Patrik Von Hurstenhoff. Most bikers in Sweden do - especially the ones around Stockholm. He has a profile and a user on the largest sports bike website/forum in Sweden (sporthoj.com). He doesn't do much these days which if you ask me is an improvement from what he used to do. He's even turned all righteous and moral speaking out against using the motorycle for such stunts - even though he still makes those annoying videos.

Most bikers in Sweden aren't really that impressed with him to be honest, except for the teenyboppers who ride around on their mopeds. Reason being is that the police have been hounding us for years because of him and his stunts, public opinion and attitude has been very negative towards sports bikers and insurance premiums have skyrocketed.

/D

Thanks. I found that link while searching the net. I've spoken to a few dealers as well and they can all provide and install a component that converts the speedomotere. Costs about £50 + labor. I will have to change the entire headlight though as you can't modify it and stickers aren't enough for registering. Funnily enough if you import a new bike from continental Europe as a dealer it is enough with a sticker... But not if I do it

Re: Km/h - Mp/h Speedometer

You can buy a Km/h to mph electronic convertor from www.mandp.co.uk

It plugs straight into the wiring loom at the gearbox end. £60 or so quid. It coverts your KM/h odo into MPH, your trip and displays your speed in MPH.
Then if you want to go touring again in Europe you just remove the plug in convertor and you're back to a KM/H clock.

The Continental models don't allow you to convert between KM and MPH. Only the UK spec models do. I know it sucks.

As for a headlight unit try phoning around some scrappies or have a look in the MCN paper under the breakers section and do some phone work. Nothing is impossible - just takes time and research.

Sorry I'd be sceptical about anything that plugged into the gearbox for the speedo as it runs off the front wheel not the gearbox.
Also ebay for headlight.

He's got a pointy (04) they are a pulse counter off the front sprocket so the above is correct. Only curvys work off the front wheel.

My pointy (-03) has the sensor on the front wheel...

Re: Km/h - Mp/h Speedometer

Hmm, pointy has digital speedo so requires a pulse counter not a cable drive. Are we saying that the 650 has a pulse counter on the front wheel rather than on the front sprocket like the thou?

IIRC all 650s have the speedo sensor on the front wheel, and they all use electronic sensors. No mechanical drives on my old curvy. Can you not just use a speedo overlay to make it road legal for the UK?My import has that and always passes the MOT with it.

Unfortunately digital speedo on the pointy, so an overlay would be quite hard to make ;)
