I used to own old BMWs for about 6 years, so more knowledge on those, but may be able to help...what kind of information are you after?

The only thing that stands out from those to check is the price - just seems a tad on the high side for a 51 plate 320i given that the 320i is a medium/low engine?

I had a 51 plate 318 SE as company car. The 320 is a 6-cyl engine yeah?

If it is a 51 plate, make sure it is the face lifted version as 51 was when the newer model came out. Tell tales are the shape of the side repeaters and position of rear fog lamps. If front fogs are fitted, they are round on face lift model and oblong (I think) on the earlier one.

Check the tyres, cos they are bally expensive. Haggle if they need replacing soon and don't settle for crap tyres as cars like this demand good tyres.

In my experience the progressive traction control comes in too early but is overwheelmed if pressing on.

Oh! Bally expensive to repair if you hedge it. :smt053 But paint does not scratch easily!

Sounds expensive. I wouldn't touch it unless it had full leather & an auto box, + all the extras.
A 24 valve Mondeo is going to be better value and more fun. Having said that, the build quality of my BMW is far better than any Ford I've ever had the pleasure to own or drive

Go for a bit of an older one and you can get a real bargain - the build quality means they last more or less forever, and as there are plenty about you can afford to be fussy and wait until a good 'un comes along

Re: anyone own or know anything about the BMW 320?

Price sounds fine to me. Also I'd rather buy a car from someone I knew who'd looked after it.

320 engine's not bad. If you've got a focus at the moment then you'll definitely prefer the 320's engine and personally I prefer a rear wheel drive, more of a drivers car in my opinion. A couple of years back I actually sold my 318 to buy a focus and regretted it.

BMW alloys are pricey. New std alloy on my 318 was £200 after I found the only set of kerbs on the Horseshoe Pass in the above hedging incident. Actually, more of a 'gorse bushing' incident............

Re: anyone own or know anything about the BMW 320?

Just had a look and you'd be on an M54 engine at the model year - I'm not sure how it compares to earlier 320i's (especially considering it's now not a 2.0L) but the 320i used to be a little underwhelming on performance and a little underwhelming on economy - was always better to go for a 325i (or 330i these days I guess!) or a 316i/318i to get one or the other.

Not sure about economy but I'm guessing the engine was upped to 2.2L to combat the growing waistline and as such performance didn't improve...

Re: anyone own or know anything about the BMW 320?

i'd really stay clear of this to be honest. Being gold you'll never be able to sell it on. If your set on a 3 series I'd go for an older 325 without doubt. the engine in them is strong (6 as apposed to 4 cylinder too) but the residual value would be much higher in a few years time. Servicing isn't actually too bad on them either. Theres some far greater cars for the money though. Get a Mercedes e190 2.5 amg! they'll outlast any modern merc, and you can get classic car insurance! (its a love it or hate it car...) :P

the 320i is a 6-cylinder too, I think the last 4-cylinder 320i was the E21! :D

Look at the most recent upper models, build quality and refinement are excellent. Even mu boss who lives just down the road from the BMW factory (or one of them) who is a BMW nut couldn't believe how well built and how comfortable my Focus is , even compared to his M5. (It's not as quick mind!).

And Toady, I have lost all faith in you, driving a Beamer..... I did think about getting one but I couldn't fail the driving test :smt110

I had an E36 BMW 320i Coupe many moons ago BC (before children,) like the one pictures below...

http://www.stylabilen.se/e36rh.jpg

It was a top car TBH, quick enough but quite juicy (especially when I drove it  :p

I'd have another one, but not in Gold and not for £8000 - There are lots of nice BM's around for a lot less than that (especially on a '51' plate :!:)

Its gold FFS, even I think thats to chavvy, and look at the colour scheme of my bike :D

Seriously dark subdued subtle colours for a BMW, Silver would be a much better colour choice and easier to sell should you want to later on.

One of our managers had a gold 318, we used to call it "The Pimpmobile"

Lol - it's dark blue, isn't it? :p

Subtle colours is definitely the way to go, dark blues, metallic greys, silvers, blacks.
