just looks like an attempt to justify why all our bills are now rounded up or down based on a 3 decimal point system.

i'm sorry but i spend my pennies in 2 decimalplaces so why are my bills calculated to 3?????

Anyone?

Afternoon all.

If a = 0.999999 then 9a= 8.999991 which divided by 9 makes a .999999.

Decimal places my dear:D

Cheers.

I wonder how many are grabbing a calculator after reading this:D

Cheers.

Re: Maths

It's NOT logic at all - just incorrect maths !!

a = 0.999 is correct

10a = 9.999 is incorrect

10a = 9.99

Therefore 10a - a 9.999 - 0.999 is incorrect it should read 9.99 - 0.999

which then gives the correct answer 8.991

Simple really :cool:

You missed the crucial ... which means literally "and so on" and is used to show a repeating pattern, in this case 0.999999999999999999999999999999999 (recuring to infinity)

Work is out again with this crucial difference and the linked page is quite correct

Exactly! Which is why Spannerman's explanation doesn't add up either.

Re: Maths

My maths is only incorrect if you accept the concept of infinity.

Personally I don't - to everything there must be an end.

Moving on - if there is an end, then 10a - a will always result in 8 followed by a finite number of 9's and the final number will be a 1

Even not terribly complex maths needs infinity, but I get your point. I was meaning proper maths not just adding up and taking away.

I like this other proof that 0.999...... = 1

1/3 = 0.333...

3 x 1/3 = 1

3 x 0.333... = 0.999...

therefore 0.999... = 1

:D

I love maths :D

'Adding up and taking away' is proper maths for most of us. We deal in real things not some airy fairy theoretical maths to prove the existance of something or other.

Re: Maths

That's quite correct ... 0.999... (which means the 9 recurs to inifinity) is as close to 1 as possible that if you use finite maths they are equal.

Well that's my take on it :rolleyes:
