Hi guys,

Looking for a bit of advice.
I am thinking of purchasing a W reg SV650 that has previously been restricted. Ideal for me as I have a restricted licence.

My local Suzuki dealer has told me that the documentation for the restrictor is useless & as such is invalid. He also told me that for it to be in my name it would have to be re-registered as restricted in my name, costing about as much as fitting a new one.

Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

apparently the resritor is registered to a particular person - not too sure though

I could be wrong but I thought the documentation was supposed to relate to the bike.Dealer restricts bike and supplies a certificate to prove it has been done.Surely then any rider can produce said certificate if required?

i know what your saying about cert being for the bike, but theoretically, whats to stop a person putting a restrictor on a bike, getting the cert, then taking it off again. the rider would have the paperwork & a bike that is more powerful than his licence permits.

i think that is why it has to be checked & registered to the new owner.

Its the documentation is for the bike not the rider!

A valid point, hence why noone cares what certificate you've got, unless your insurance company requires one, most don't but I wont categorically state that none do.

As for registered to the new owner/ registering the bike/ FI international world database thats all b0llocks too, the bike must produce <33bhp, thats the only law on it and if the police (or insurance) think otherwise then they will physically check, they won't contact suzuki or FI as you could easily have it registered (if there was such a thing) as 33bhp and then remove the restrictor.

So in conclusion the dealers talking rubbish, go and rag it to check it is restricted (about 95mph max with 33bhp) and that'll do. Don't worry about a certificate.

I'm not so sure. My restriction certificate has my name and address on it.
It also says: New owners are advised to check that the restrictor kit remains fitted and operational before relying on this certificate."
If I were you I would phone the DVLA or your insurance company

Thats telling you the same as what I said, basically the certificate doesn't mean a restrictor kit is actually still on the bike.
+1 for phoning your insurance, I asked bennetts, they didn't care, saying "lots of bikes are sold restricted without papers, so never mind, but if you prang it our assesor will check the restrictors are in place" or words to that effect.
Others may differ, and a phone call isn't that expensive to check.
