Sv650 naked buying advice please

Hi all

just joined.

Getting back into biking after the kids have grown up. Always liked the SV650 naked since it came out but never owned one ( yet)

Good with engines and fixing etc, looking at one with 50k miles on a 55 reg. looks tatty on the photos and the fork seals are rising with rust. they want 1k for it.

Are they easy to work on etc?

What sort of mileage can they do as most are a lot lower mileage but more money.

thanks in advance!

Hi Ged and welcome along. SVs are pretty easy to work on, and have a good solid engine in them which can do big mileages as long as you look after them (regular oil and filter changes). I have a 2000 curvy model which has recently gone over the 100,000 mile mark. Essentially the same engines except for the move to fuel injection from carbs.

Thanks for the reply and information

I’m going to view the bike on Sunday so let you know how it goes!

If I don’t buy it I’ll keep looking around till I find one

Sounds expensive for a tatty one. I would look for a better one and make a cheeky offer. Asking price and selling price can be very different

Check the chain and sprockets for undue wear. If the bike/engine has been hammered there are usually signs of galling on the sprockets. These engines cannot take doing,"Wheelies" as it drains oil from the top-end leading to possible premature engine failure.

Mad8V from the US forum has done proving work on what happens to this engine when raised above a certain angle.

As per other post there are some much lower mileage examples around and worth paying for IMHO and as always with 2nd hand bikes if they are in original good condition livery they have usually been cared for.

I watched eBay for at least three months before I saw the SV650 I wanted at a dealer in Newcastle and in 2017 paid £1595 for a 16K( Now on 30k+) miles one in original well cared for livery. It's been a great purchase for me.

Apart from normal consumables the only thing I've had to do was put a new R/R on it

https://cx500.000webhostapp.com/Mosf...orcycleRR.html

and replace the rear indicators with some generic ones off eBay as some Tw*t broke one when it was parked up on a job :(

Slip-on exhaust was by choice as are the Fender-Extender/Screen/ Hand Guards and Rear-Hugger.

HTH :)
