Charging Problems
 

Got a problem in my SVS,

If I ride it with the dipped or main beam on, the battery doesn't charge.
If I only use the low beam, then the battery charges up just fine.

Anyone had a similar problem? And what did you do to solve it!

Probally your battery on its way out (not holding the charge) - check your charge output at the battery with a volt meter to see if its charging in the first place - if it is charging,then your battery is suspect.

as mick24 says, basically it's either the charging system or the battery, so you need to find out which.

You really need to check if the charging system is capable of delivering enough voltage to charge the battery while the lights are on. It should do!

Put a voltmeter on the battery (digital multimeters can be got very cheap nowadays, for example Maplins). With the lights on and the engine idling you'll probably see somewhere round 12volts. When you increase revs to 4000rpm or so it should rise to around 14volts (give or take a bit). The battery won't charge successfully if it doesn't get above 13.5V or so.

If it's not, then it may well be the regulator/rectifier has died - not that uncommon on the SV.

If the voltage is rising OK, then chances are it's the battery not accepting charge. They tend to die one of 2 ways, either suddenly when plates break up or short out, or progressively as the plate material "wears out". May well be yours is just getting tired. Battery life varies enormously depending how it's used, how good it was originally etc, but if it's more than 3yrs old it's a reasonable lifetime. :?
