Adjusting chain slack, axle nuts

2018 650

What gives with the smaller, right-side axle nut? The shop manual doesn't say a word about it. When I adjusted the chain slack, I loosened it along with the usual larger, left-side nut in order to move both sides of the wheel. I had to--the smaller nut turned when I loosened the larger nut. Am I in trouble? Is that smaller right-side nut supposed to be held in place by something that broke?

No, you're not and no, nothing's broken. The axle is basically a large bolt so you undid the big nut and now the head of the bolt is turning, you just need to put a wrench on the small, (right hand side) bolt head as you tighten/torque the big nut.

That's good to know. Thanks. It's the first bike I've had with an axle bolt threaded on both ends.

PS
The main engine carrier bolt is also threaded on both ends. I'm beginning to think the Gen 3 SV650s are built to a lower cost threshold than the earlier ones.

Hi, so youre saying youve got a nut on both sides of the axle and if you remove these completely it'll leave just threaded shaft sticking out both sides? If so that is a big change from the earlier bikes or maybe the bikes on this side of the Atlantic and makes me wonder how the axle is kept centered so that you dont end up with one side sticking out more than the other.....

The axle isn't threaded on both ends unless it is different from the 2016 models. (unlikely). The parts diagram I showed was from a 2017 model. It is a hollow bolt, the thread/nut is on the left hand side (the chain side), the other side (exhaust side) is simply the head of the axle bolt which has a hole in it (You made me go and look and it's raining!).

I also looked on the SuzukiPartsHouse website (a US site) and it shows the same as the UK. https://www.suzukipartshouse.com/oem...l-sv650al7-e28

Oh, I get it. The axle is a real bolt. What I thought was a nut on the right side is the cap of the bolt. Doh!

Anyway, sorry about the rain. But, wait, it's England ...

Oh, by the way, how will motos be affected by Brexit, if it ever happens? Costs will go up, I suppose. Are any brands planning to stop selling in the UK?

The only way those worms will go back in the can is with a bigger can. We await the outcome with baited breath, maybe the next 10yrs or so will show what happens.

Just and Extra tip.Because of the age of my SV I don't trust my Chain wear markers so I use a metal tape measure and measure from the Swinging arm centres to the Axle centres so they match on both sides to get the chain alignment Exact.

HTH :)
