Caliper service kit??
Hi, bought an old (2000) Sv curvy with 30k miles, very little service history. Bought Hel cables and new oil and want to give the callipers a good clean as well. Thinking about a service kit and seen some on eBay with seals and pistons for about £40. Do you guys agree and eBay kit ok?? Thanks

Have you had the calipers off to see how they look first. You may be ok with just a good clean up. I regularly carefully remove the seals from the callipers, clean them and put them back with a fresh coat of red rubber grease. No leak problems or degraded braking performance so far.
Similarly, the pistons may well need no more than popping out and cleaning. What you may end up replacing though are the pad retaining pins and p clips. |

Thanks, yea will probably do what your suggesting. The bikes not being used so no desperate need to get done quickly. First time doing a service so what should I be looking for wear wise?

Just noticed they don’t have the pistons but they are All Balls and about £35. Probably double the price with pistons

Look for pitting on pistons. Any leaks around seals. If seals are good keep them as aftermarket can sometimes stick / cause problems. Make sure you put the seals back in the right way round too when you reassemble othersiwe they'll stick. As mentioned you may need new slider pins etc. You'll want red rubber grease and copper grease. If you're cleaning out the inside of the calipers then metal dental picks can be useful for getting into crevices and scraping the crud out.

The bit you need to be particularly scrupulous about are the recesses in which the dust seals locate. These recesses get a lot of oxidisation in them which pushes the dust seals out and causes them to grab the pistons. This prevents the pistons from creeping through the seals in order to take up the wear on the pads and you end up with a lot of lever travel before the brakes work. Gentles work with the dental pick and use of a brass bristled disc brush to clean out the recess thoroughly.

+1 ... ^ That's the bit I was recommending the dental pick for.
Gentle on the internal ares that the seals contact. The outside is a different story. I think I remember using a chisel to remove built up crud in the main outside areas of the caliper on one occaision! |
