Russian TU-22M3 bomber crash last week

Horrendous crash on landing, skip to 1 min 18. The plane seems to fold in half.
1 survivor, 3 dead.

Try watching it at 0.25 speed - spooky the way it breaks up. Looks like this model has an extra landing gear in the fuselage between the nose gear and wing positions and it seemed to come apart above this point. Nasty.

Seemed to be approaching the ground very fast, maybe due to visual conditions the pilot could not clearly see the ground and landed before he thought he was going to, did not notice the plane 'flaring' ( no joke ) before landing to lift the nose and make sure main wheels touched ground first and then the nosewheel.

What it normally looks like:

It looks like it broke its back near the start of the wing root.

That plane has the look of a General dynamics F111 about it, particularly the nose and cockpit, I know the F111 is smaller with crew of 2.

I guess with lack of money in Russia their military stuff may not be getting the TLC that complex stuff needs.

Looked like the rate of decsent was too high and it hit the ground far too hard and broke up.

Poor weather conditions so the pilot would have lost the ground in the white of the fog and laying snow. Not sure if Russian military have ILS or if they just have a visual system like the old VARSI?

Actually, the Tu22 fleet is in the process of getting upgrades to the latest version.
