I have often wondered how those eBay cheapies would compare in terms of effectiveness / longevity compared to the name-brand heated clothing.

You can heated sleeveless fleeces for about £15 which would easily fit under most biking jackets.

Interesting but can 10w of power really heat you up that much?

When I used to ride all year round. I found it was never my core that was cold.
More the fingers and toes and neck.
And you need your digits to control the bike effectively.
I found heated grips helped but again only on the palm of your hand rather than the fingers.

I'm just glad I no longer have to hardcore it like that. But I do miss being a more competent rider.

Nice one.Keeping core temps up helps keep fingers etc warmer.

Also if you are going for a day out have a bowl of porridge.It's a slow release food and keeps hunger away and the body core temps good :)

I still have me Keis inner heated gloves which are still running good getting on for 10 years!

I found that heated grips had a point of diminishing returns e.g the better the Winter gloves I used the less heat got through to my hands whereas the Inner gloves give gentle heat to all my fingers.

Once upon a time I rode all year round (not any more, thanks). Fundamental thing is to keep the core warm, as said by others. If your body senses it's getting cold the first thing it will do is cut blood flow to the extremities. Arms are next, I'd suggest, you won't keep hands warm if your arms are getting cold.
I found a waterproof outer over a decent jacket helped a lot, just keeping the direct wind off works wonders. A good quality merino wool undergarment is a great help too.

This is the first winter in quite a few years that I have carried on riding - I have a blood circulation problem called secondary Raynaud's (secondary because other health conditions caused it) and therefore suffer badly with cold. I thought I would give one of these USB heated vests a go, thinking it was worth a try at around £15

They have proved so popular prices have gone up a little since I bought one in December. I was slightly pessamistic that it would be any good as it only uses about 8w on high - I needn't have worried and infact I'm quite impressed. I'm running it off a 1.5a USB supply under my pillion seat via a lead. This requires making a small button sized hole in each layer you wear over the vest (but not your jacket), to post its usb connector through. My brother prefers to run his of a USB power bank (no need to make button holes in your clothing), using one battery on a run outbound and a fresh battery for return - so several hours on two batteries.
I bought one size bigger than the size chart suggested for me and was glad I did. One problem is you can't see the glowing power button to see what level of power it is on, but if you press it for three seconds it automatically preheats and then drops to medium - this has been fine for me. If you already have a USB socket on your bike or own USB power bank batteries for your phone or tablet, then this may be well worth a try for you.

That's really interesting, I might give one a go. Can I ask what size you are, and what size vest you got? I am 5'11" / 180cm with a 42" chest.
